China lifts travel ban on Taiwan's islands of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu

Despite deteriorating cross-strait ties, China has removed a ban on free and easy travel to Taiwan's outlying islands. Beijing's willingness to exempt the islands of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu highlights its affinity with the former battlefronts. Since China imposed the ban on Aug 1, the three islands have seen the number of mainland visitors falling by more than half. Beijing agreed to exclude the outlying islands from the ban after a joint plead made by the three county magistrates.
