This is a very thought out and recorded “how to”. I was able to get up and playing almost right away. I had to watch an additional 2 times when I came a across a “what if” situation. Excellent job!

I learned this game at camp years ago. This is a very intense game when two plays have mastered it. If the player lays down their last card it is a competition to get to the smaller pile. If you like this game also check out Spoons or Crazy Eights both classic.

Step by step: Written Out

I taught this to friends but they kept wanting to watch the video over and over because they didn't understand the game well. Hope this helps, he explained it so well!!!

How To Play Spit

DEAL

1. 52 card deck
1. no jokers
2. Cards are split evenly (26 per player)

SETUP

1. The cards are set up with 5 cards being formed.
2. Additional cards are added starting with the second pile.
3. The process is repeated starting with the 3rd, then 4th, and finally the 5th pile.
4. The remaining pile is known as the spit pile.
5. The top cards on the 5 piles are flipped up.

OBJECTIVE

* Be the first player to get rid of all his cards.

* During gameplay, cards that are one number higher or one number lower are played on top of each other.

GAMEPLAY

1. The game begins with each player flipping the top card of their spit card into the middle. Each player places their card into the left side of middle instead of directly across.

2. Cards are moved in three ways.
1. Each top card of the 5 piles can be played into the middle if the rank is one higher or one lower than the card showing.
2. The top card on a players pile can be moved into an empty space (of the 5 piles only) left when all cards from a pile have been played.
3. Cards with matching ranks can be stacked on top of each other within the 5 piles.

3. Players play as fast as possible and do not take turns.

4. If and when both players cannot play into the middle, then another card is flipped into the middle from each player's spit pile (remembering that each player places their card into the left side of middle instead of directly across.)

5. Once a player has played all the cards from their 5 piles, either player can slap a middle pile of cards.
1. A pile that is slapped is kept by the player.
2. With the objective being to get rid of cards, players will want to slap the smaller of the two piles.

6. The players will shuffle the pile taken with their spit pile and set up another round.

WINNING

1. When a player has 15 or fewer cards the 5 piles are created until the cards run out. This will mean a player will not have a spit pile and there will only be one middle pile created by the other player.

2. Once a player goes out by playing all their cards, the middle pile goes to the losing player.

3. If the winning player has no cards left, they win the game.

RULES REVIEW

1. Players can have no more than 5 piles in front of them (disregarding their spit pile.)

2. Only one card can be played at a time into the middle.

3. If both players are stuck and neither player has a spit pile left, the round is over and players slap pile to take.
1. If players slap the same pile, the player with the hand on the bottom takes the pile.

In the version I used to play, the first (and subsequent) round winner could add rules like "two hands" or "slaps". Slaps is a friendship breaker because any player could claim the smaller pile by slapping it first if at least one player runs out of cards.

Weird, this is actually how I was taught how to play speed lol but technically, there really isn't that much of a difference.

We play it differently at my school. Instead of holding the deck in our hands, we put it on our right hand side, in the middle of the setup. Once we spit, we use both hands to play. And instead of doing that ladder setup of 1, 2, 3, ect. We put 11 cards on the middle with 2 on each side. When the other person has 15 or fewer, one card is out on the other side and who ever slaps it first wins the round and the other person keeps the bigger pile.

So I played this game as a kid and we had a house rule when only 1 pile was in the middle. There is a "ghost pile" that you slap when one person runs out of cards and you have to say "ghost" instead of "spit" (we say spit when there are 2 piles and we slap one). So this gives the other player with all the cards a chance to catch up because they can slap the ghost pile if their reflexes are fast enough and the person with no cards gets the 1 middle pile. The extra twist is that when you slap the ghost pile and you say "spit" instead of "ghost" out of muscle memory, you lose the round and get the middle pile even if you slapped the ghost pile first. Just a couple house rules to prolong the game a bit that I really enjoyed as a kid and thought I'd share.

Very stylish video. Informate, clear and easy to understand. I was mainly watching this top check I was playing this game correctly. I often use a Joker as the empty unused pile, in order to let the other player have a fighting chance to slap it.
