Ever since I was a kid I have had a soft spot for the Universal Studio Monster franchise I love to watch them with the lights off on a Friday or Saturday night. Freddy Krueger Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers can, t hold a candle to the original Monsters.

Chaney's transformation scene in the hospital in Frankenstein meets the wolfman is in my view is still the greatest transformation scene in movie history.

Lon, Jr.'s Lawrence Talbot/Wolf Man remains one of the great iconic characters in film history. In contrast to latter-day werewolves, Larry was tormented with his situation and didn't lust after killing, even as he had no choice. A great movie (check that cast!) and a great performance by Jr.

Didn't know Lon Jr. wanted to create makeup like his old man. That's Hollywood....

Old, when I said that "Maria Ouspenskaya lives" it was not just in the figurative sense. She studied under Stanislavsky in Russia, then herself taught in New York, where Stella Adler studied under her. In turn, Stella Adler taught Marlon Brando and Robert de Niro (among many others) which brings Madam's genius right down to the present day. MO had that Roman queen right down to the button (it pains me to hear other characters in her "werewolf" films refer to her an an "old hag" and an "old witch, " for I think she was beautiful). For example, see Maria Ouspenskaya as the maharani in "The Rains Came." She was indeed beautiful and elegant here (though some wag remarked that how often do you see an Indian maharani with a Yiddish accent? LoL). The only one who could compare with her in these "old hag" roles was the wonderful Jeanette Nolan, who had the corner on "old witch" and "old hag" roles--put the make-up on her and she was good to go, even though, in real life, JN was a very handsome woman. Maria Ouspenskaya lives forever on film and in the influence she had on others in her art ("A man who is bitten by a werewolf and lives, becomes a werewolf himself." Great Lady, we remember you!

His name was not "Lon Chaney, Jr.", but Creighton Chaney. Disgrace to his father's name to rip it off to try and further his own career.
