The mere exposure effect is real! The more we see something, the more familiar it becomes and the more we start to like it. So it makes sense that you were drawn to the Stanley after consuming so much content despite not liking it initially. It also helps us understand why fashion trends that we find weird at first can grow on us over time. Companies have clearly exploited this aspect of our psychology by getting their products in front of us every chance they get - the more we see them, the more likely we are to eventually buy them.

I accept that in this day and age I'm going to be influenced in some way, and make a conscious choice on how I'm going to be influenced. I follow people that influence me to cook more, buy less, explore the outdoors more, spend more time learning languages etc.

Hard to understand the impact of influencers until I started following your channel and began to see my reactions to favorite persons. I still put items into a cart but now I wait and reconsider my purchases. Learning to wait and think has me emptying my cart or never putting items in 😮

I think that pinterest is very underestimated as a factor in (over)consumption. I know for me for example, I don't have tik tok nor I use Insta that much because I don't care too much about the "comments/social" parts but I live on pinterest! I pass hours crafting my boards or just scrolling between beautiful pins and I start daydreaming about the life and aesthetic I want to achieve... and the stuff that I want to buy to do so! Clothes, jewels, skincare, shoes, books, etc... there may not be influencers telling me to buy but oh boy I do that all by myself! Fortunately I'm able to keep myself in track and remind myself to not waste money on stuff and that I don't want to pollute the enviroment... but the impulse to purchase the stuff is still there. It's like if i buy the items I will also buy the lifestyle....

As a Gen X’er who grew up in the 80’s the band t-shirt situation resonated with me. I went down that hole once, but the ones I was looking for were very expensive because they were from so long ago that they are considered vintage. The cost was a great way to talk myself out of buying. What I did do is start going to concerts again since many of my fav bands are still around. Obviously it’s a different experience now since we are all old 😂, BUT I’d much rather have the memories of the experiences than old vintage shirts.

i’m embarrassed to admit that i have definitely been influenced to buy things bc of the exposure effect: it’s so true that when you see something enough times and you see enough people talking about how great it is that it changes your perception on it. i’ve started reducing the amount of fashion related content that i watch bc it was definitely influencing my overconsumption. i love clothes and fashion, and i would consider it a passion of mine so it’s hard to give up. unfortunately, with most fashion creators shopping, hauls, reviews, and trying trends are just part of the gig. it’s so easy to be influenced when watching that kind of content, especially if you’re watching people who have a similar style to you and you’re already predisposed to overconsumption.

pleaseeee confront the “buying my entire wishlist (dollar amount flex)” youtube videos that won’t leave my suggested homepage list this month (even though i haven’t watched a single one!)

I love your videos, Shawna! I personally don’t struggle that much with shopping, but I definitely struggle with other addictive behaviors that cost money. Listening to you talk about the dopamine rollercoaster and talk about how you get yourself off of it has helped me a lot recently. Thank you! Keep up the great work ❤
Also loved the photo evidence of your purchases 😂

I always appreciate you going into the details!! You’re so right a lot of ‘social media’s influence’ videos or articles don’t point out specific personal examples that most of us experience but don’t thing about it. Very good video

I follow certain people to be influenced, but they're artists. I follow cardmakers whose art I enjoy to see what new stamps are out there, what papers might be out there, so decide if I like them or not. While these are often ads, I've never seen and certainly have never followed or used affiliate links. When they first FIRST started I made sure to make a habit of not clicking on affiliate links because I didn't want to reward the possibility of biased opinions. Obviously the world went the other direction, but it's habit now, so if I see something, even if the full name was not provided, I'll do my own googling instead of asking or clicking. So I can't say I've never bought something directly after seeing someone I follow share it, but like the Bob's Burgers stamps I saw and bought immediately, those things I usually genuinely like and use right away. My stamps were used almost immediately when I opened the package. Similar with colouring book people, but to a slightly lesser extent because I'm *very* picky about my books.

The Orange tan😂 i used the dove cream that was supposed to tan really slowly and natural, because i am very light skinned and i always had problems with patchy and Orange skin when i tried other selftanners. And i loved it thought that it looked soo natural, until i went to my Doktor for something else and he said that he wanted to check my kidneys because i had an unnatural yellow tint to my skin😂😂😂😂 since then i never used Tanning products again. That is also the reason why i dont wear foundation, i only use tinted moistoriser, Because foundations always look either Orange or grey, atleast the ones i have tried and i am just over it.❤

You can be forgiven for that pale orange look in 2016. Remember that was the full glam manny mua era.

I watched a lot of beauty influencers back in the day, I don’t have any products I regret buying but I do regret buying more than I can actually use. I think for me the shift away from being influenced came from realising that most products actually weren’t things I authentically liked or was organically looking for so they weren’t really “me”. I’m never really tempted to buy things from influencers now and I watch a lot more thrift fashion so I get inspiration not marketing.

Aesthetics and trends like cool girl, coquette, vanillia girl, almond mom, ..etc are the main reasons for the overconsumption phenomena

As a 18 year old BEAUTY WITHIN influenced me to spend half of my first real paycheck on skincare.... my bathroom shelf was FULL and I regret that so much

When I am thinking of buying something I go straight to one/two star reviews or watch a deinfliencing video

Your videos have honestly helped so much i’ve started purchasing less and just making the thing i want. It’s actually so much more rewarding to make a stuffed animal instead of going out and buying them and you think much more instead of mindlessly buying it. Want a brownie? Ill just make it myself and share with people.

The last things I overbought was 4 shades of lip stain liner to realize I wasted $125 because they are dumb and I hate them. And idek how much on perfume samples to realize I hate or ant least do not care for all of them too. It was so disappointing- and that coupled with the videos has helped me continuously choose to not purchase any beauty consumables. I’m just turned off. Also, opening a high yield savings account and making saving goals for every couple of months is inspiring me to save more too
