I taught Kindergarten at an inner city Catholic school and it was the day to make St. Valentine’s Day cards for our parents. I placed out the various tracers for hearts, doilies, stickers, red, pink, and white paper, paste, scissors, etc. On the chalkboard I had various suggestions of what to write on the outside and inside. On one bulletin board I had neatly printed Bible verses about love, should anyone wish to copy one. In the back corner of the room, there hung a poster of The 10 Commandments that was divided into two sections, “❤ GOD” and “❤ OTHERS.” The poster had been there since the beginning of the school year in September.

Many of the children came from “broken” homes, sometimes necessitating the creation of several cards, something new in the 1970’s. I allowed the children freedom to create as they wished, only helping if requested. I had them place their completed cards along the back counter and window sills because many needed the paste to dry. They would bring them home the following day in special envelopes I prepared.

Once the class had gone, I looked the cards over, mainly to wipe off excess paste and make sure there was a signature. That was a very good move on my part, because one girl had made two cards, one for her mother and grandmother with whom she lived, and another for her birth father who’d divorced her mother and remarried to a former girlfriend the previous summer. The divorce and almost immediate remarriage was highly contentious and the poor child was the subject of a heated custody battle. The cover of the card was a doily with “For Daddy” written on it. On the inside was neatly copied from the ❤ OTHERS side of The 10 Commandments poster, “[6] Thou shall not commit adultery.” She’d drawn a girl with a sad face and written her name.
Just because people will wonder what I did, I called her grandmother that afternoon and explained the situation. I didn’t dare intervene directly with the child or her mother who had a hot temper. Fortunately, Grandma was of a calm temperament. She requested I put makings of another card in the envelope along with the two cards. She’d be picking up her granddaughter early from school next day, and would see to the matter. I heard nothing more about it and kept my lips sealed for at least a decade.
