Bob Marley - Judge Not [1962]

"Judge Not" is Bob Marley's first recorded single, recorded at Federal Studios released on Leslie Kong's Beverley's Records in Jamaica in 1962 and on Island Records in the UK the following year. With a ska beat, Marley has a youthful voice, as it was his first recorded song. Though "Judge Not" failed to achieve much success, Marley was not discouraged and continued to record music. "Judge Not" was re-released in the Songs of Freedom album in 1992 as well as other compilations. The song was also covered by Sublime, and can be found on the box set Everything Under the Sun.
The song is about morality, and may have been based on the Biblical quote "Judge not lest ye be judged". Some of the song lyrics are paraphrased in the background vocals of the later Marley hit "Could You Be Loved".

Released on an album funded by local Jamaican entrepreneur Leslie Kong and released on the Beverley's label. This track 'Judge Not' got some radio play, the other tracks 'Terror' and 'One Cup of Coffee' received none. By 1963 Bob Marley had formed his band with Bunny and Peter Tosh, 'The Wailing Wailers'. ....under the guidance of drummer Alvin Patterson the band met with now legendary music producer Clement 'sir Coxsone' Dodd (Studio One) in Kingston and their first recorded hit was in the final weeks of 1963, 'Simmer Down'.

Bob Marley met emperor Haile Selassie in 1966 and his music started to reflect more of a spiritual and social movement. . . and more sensual rhythms, now known as 'rock steady'. (Haile Selassie is a historic figure well worth reading about...the lyrics to the track 'War' were from a speech by Haile Selassie, for example)

Moving away from recording with Dodd, they formed their most successful partnership with Lee 'Scratch' Perry in the late 1960s. ....and let's not forget Island records and Chris Blackwell.
