Hi Hamster Friends!

Today's video is of my giant Roborovski hamster, Oscar!

Oscar has been increasingly itchy and now has two scabs on his little bod 😢

After trying to eliminate any possible allergens (hemp bedding, coconut soil) and food allergens, in addition to putting him on prednisone (steroid), he still wasn't getting better. This week he went in for another visit and had a "skin scraping". The vet was able to see microscopic mites when she looked at the scraping, so Oscar will begin ivermectin as soon as we are able to get some (it's become difficult thanks to all of the controversy around it).

Oscar is my least tame hamster, but I have been working with him as much as possible to make him easier to handle and less afraid of hands. This came in handy because the vet didn't need to put him under to get the skin scraping- this saved me hundreds of dollars, and, more importantly, reduced the risk to Oscar (there is always a risk when you put an animal under, particularly the very small animals!)

The type of mites he has are non-transferrable to humans and live naturally in the hamster skin microbiome. However, if the hamster has a dip in their immune system, the mites can become over populated can cause a lot of itchiness for the hamster.

We don't know why Oscar had a dip in his immune system, but I'm hopeful that we can at least alleviate his itchiness and get him feeling better soon!

Thanks for joining me on my hamster care journey!

There are so many hamsters in need of a loving home with a large wheel and lots of burrowing space! Fostering is a great way to help out and very rewarding.

Most small animal rescues also take donations through their website, anything helps!
