What Were Viking Arm Rings Used For?

Despite their infamous reputation for ruthless raids, Vikings’ jewelry was held in high regard by nations throughout the world for its exquisite craftsmanship. And although Vikings were feared, their rich culture, history, and ability to create intricate jewelry like bracelets and the famous Viking arm ring have done much to push the vicious side of these bearded men into the background.

After realizing there is another world outside of the Vikings’ world with inconceivable riches, most Vikings came up with a plan to seize a portion of that treasure for their own use and fame. To do so, the Vikings were loyal to the earls and leaders who gave them support, thus making it possible to secure some portion of their wealth in return. The Viking arm ring was how they made sure that they would be able to protect their belongings while doing so.

In Viking times, chiefs and warriors would take an oath to one another. Often, it was the leader who presented the warrior an arm ring that would seal their pledge in blood as unbreakable. As you can imagine, loyalty was extremely important to Vikings. Also, when a boy reached the age of maturity into manhood, he was presented with an arm ring. In Viking culture, this ceremony recognized his arrival into adulthood.

The Vikings were often separated from loved ones for unknown lengths of time. As a result, couples would often wear the same Viking wedding ring on the same finger. The rings served as acts of symbolism and love, but also as secret communication pieces between Viking couples that would not betray one another during the long voyages at sea.

I want to know if the arm ring is supposed to be worn on the wrist or on the bicep (arm)?"

Where are the rings, though? I'm only seeing one at a time! They look like the silver bracelets Jamaican girls got as gifts on every occasion, and if you wanted to show off, you wore *all* of them, up to the elbow on both arms, to show how many doting aunties you had back on the island. I thought Vikings rode to battle showing off their bling!
