China’s growing military might has prompted a change of focus for the transatlantic security alliance created to defend Europe and North America from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. For the first time in its 72-year history, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) has branded China as presenting “systemic challenges”. In a statement issued on June 14, 2021, at the conclusion of a one-day summit meeting, Nato countries vowed to counter Beijing’s rise to power.
