11 kV D.D.O. fuse explodes on a cable fault

The HV cable was meggered and had one phase reading lower than the other two phases, although the 5 kV Megger didn't break it down fully.

A low amperage high tension fuse was used to test the cable and avoid risking tripping the feeder.

The fault developed as a phase to screen fault which was later traced and thumped. Fault found in the crutch of the PILCpart of cable in the.300 kVA transformer.

We didn't want to test it with a normal fuse because that could have caused more important fuses to blow, so we used a smaller rated fuse than normal for the test. For anyone that doesn't know, that little swinging stick on the pole he was trying to push up, is called an expulsion fuse and it completes the circuit and allows power to flow again. The slightly bulky thing he was trying to push it back into what's called a cutout. If the voltage gets too high or there's some type of surge or fault, the fuse does something similar to what a circuit breaker in your house does, only instead of the switch popping to the "off" position, it blows up. :) Usually VERY loudly, as you can see here. LOL

The boom noise is the actual fuse exploding and opening the circuit.
The pushing rod is called a hot stick or ddo fuse stick and is high voltage rated and made of fiberglass.

Correct, in this case the cable was faulty. In the industry a 5kV insulation tester / Megger is used. Sometimes a cable test reading is lower on one of the phases but not low enough to break down with test gear. e.g. 500 Meg. 450 Meg and 30 Meg ohms. obviously the lower reading most likely has a problem with it. To save time with an outage it is better to blow another 15 dollar fuse into the fault, and get a good fault which is easier to detect with test equipment.

On 11 kV cables we use 8 or 16 kV pulses to locate faults with a so called Thumper. to create an arc across the fault and pick up the noise with a listening set. Prior to that test the cable route is traced and marked out for its path.

They don't blow up randomly. This one blew up at a cable fault.
In your case a cable underground mat have faulted or a transformer.
Also there could have been road-works somewhere, and they struck a cable with a digger or drill.

There is no gun powder in the fuse. It is the arc melting the fuse wire in a confined space ( the ddo tube ) and unlatching it from the source. DDO stands for Dominion Drop Out fuse.
