A singer-songwriter from near Cattletsburg, Kentucky, he now works full-time as a musician. His musical passion started as a young teen, when his dad bought him his first guitar in 8th grade. It was really his stepdad, Scott Sword, who encouraged his learning, and Cole credits him with being the real reason he started playing.

My dad told me he would break my legs if he caught me in the coal mines and to leave and do something different. I went to war, found the love of my life on an island, then became a tug captain. No regrets except because I left, I never had enough time with my dad after that. He is still the greatest man I've ever known.

Pumped that we’re the fortunate few to know of Cole Chaney before he explodes to superstardom

I hate how underrated he is like his one of the best vocalist I’ve heard and he doesn’t have much popularity like he definitely deserves it

“When you get to the end of the tunnel, just keep on running my friend.” Love the symbolism.

This song really speaks to me. I come from a long line of West Virginia coal miners who were so poor they couldn’t even afford to go to school, let alone move somewhere else and find better jobs. It took a group effort to get them out of the holler and into a city a state away for a better shot at life, and my dad doesn’t let me forget what it took from my grandfathers so that him, my brother, and I could live better lives and not have to work in those mines.

Even when you leave Appalachia, ... it never leaves you. I've been away for 30 plus years, and it still feels more like home than it does here...

This will go down in history for one of the best Western classic country songs ever written. The story telling is great, the tone and temp pace the story and you can feel the description in the lyrics and voice. It's very well put together and I'm very surprised he isn't getting credit that needs to be given to him. Cole Chaney has pure talent

This dude can sing, sounds the same on Spotify and live filming. This song tells a story that most can’t relate to, but wow.

My grandpa grew up in coal wood West Virginia with 5 brothers and a sister in a shitty company house, his oldest brothers Harry and John work coal their whole lives and died of black lung my grandfather did it for a few years but stole his brothers birth certificate and joined the navy and left, he eventually was stationed in Rhode Island and had my mother and my aunts I honor him and his brothers I’m an open pit miner with the biggest quarry in Rhode Island, god bless coal miners we have no idea the struggle they had

Eastern Kentucky has really turned out some of the best singer/songwriters in the last 10 years. I mean, not just good musicians, but great songwriters too. Music is my lifeblood, and musicians like this just haunt you with lyrics matched with their vocals. That's coming from an East Tennessean. There's a music festival here called Bristol Rhythm and Roots, and I'd love to see you there next year. Jason Isbell is headlining this year I believe.

Before my grandpa passed he made me swear I’d be the first male in the family to not go into the mines. Much respect for the ones who do it

Dude if you keep writing songs like this one and the flood, people will gravitate to it weather you want them too or not really.

Thanks to redbarn for uploading him. They get overlooked I'm sure and without them I wouldn't know who this guy is(and a CPL others for that matter)

My great grandma grew up in a cabin the middle of nowhere West Virginia. She lived with her two sisters and grandparents. They had dirt floors and a shitty cabin. You discribing where you lived reminds me of that place.
