Guatemala official says relationship with Taiwan ‘rock-solid’

A Guatemalan official has dispelled rumors about a break in Taiwan-Guatemala relations. In a prerecorded video, Guatemala’s deputy foreign minister pushed back against a Chinese news report, which said Guatemala hoped to strengthen ties with Beijing. The official said that ties between Taiwan and Guatemala remained, quote, “rock solid.”

The video was played in Taiwan on Thursday, at an event promoting Guatemalan coffee. Guatemala is the fourth-largest exporter of coffee beans to Taiwan, accounting for 15% of the Taiwan market.
