Commissioned (Joshua 1:1-9)

1) First Thoughts
a. Life is full of transitions and surprises that often force you to take on additional responsibilities. As we lay hold of God’s calling, we will find our fulfillment in doing His will. We also will become more like Jesus as we follow Him step-by-step. As with Joshua, God promises to be with you, but He also expects your complete obedience.
2) Understand the Context
a. Joshua chapter 1 serves as a transition between the death of Moses and the calling of Joshua as God’s servant leader to Israel. After conquering the land, Joshua successfully divided it among the tribes and led them as they began to transition to an agricultural, non-nomadic lifestyle. “And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua,” (24:31)
3) Explore the Text
a. A New Leader (1:1-5)
i. “now therefore arise, go” – Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, ~ Philippians 3:13
ii. Sometimes God alerts us to the present and points us to the future.
iii. When facing challenges, believers should draw strength and courage from God’s presence.
b. A New Task (1:6)
i. God communicated His plan as though the victory had already been accomplished. See I Corinthians 15:57.
ii. A formidable task awaited them (and us). “…, even so we also should walk in newness of life. ~ Romans 6:4b
iii. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. ~ Romans 8:37
c. A New Trust (1:7-9)
i. Your success in serving the Lord hinges on your obedience to the word of the Lord in every area of life.
ii. When we accept the Lord’s commission, trust in His Word, and count on His presence, we will find courage to face whatever He calls us to do.
4) Memory Verse: There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. ~ Joshua 1:5
