A short film by Dušan Kastelic, 'The Box' is full of miserable creatures. One of them doesn’t belong there. He’s thinking outside the box…
You have probably heard of the phrase "To think outside of the box"? Well, this is a film about such a box and the flat-headed creatures that live inside of it. Life in the Box is boring and miserable. Until one day when a new baby boy starts to grow in the middle of the Box! This baby is very different from other flat-headed inhabitants of the Box. He's happy, lively, and curious. As the baby grows bigger and bigger, the flat-headed neighbors are becoming more and more annoyed with him. Until one day when he literally grows over their heads…

The nail that stick up gets hammered. It's sad, because it's likely that they were all like the one who escaped at one point. They weren't just damaged, they were broken to the point that they no longer showed any initiative or activity outside what was expected. When the guy at the end started to show a little light inside himself, he was quickly struck. Not just a good story, but a lesson not to fall prey to complacency of others.

They were laughing at it because its spirit was crushed, his light, like theirs, would be snuffed out by the pressure of the machine, and it would conform to them. Misery loves company. In the end, however, it still found a way to think outside the box.

11:20 you probably missed what it was about. A melody of inspiration plays in the background. One of the veterans, got inspiration and hope that he can get out of the box, just like the little boy, and then something amazing happened, his spirit came back to life, after a long time, and made his eyes shine again (they lived in the dark since the light bulb went out at the end of the clip), he started again to feel like the little boy he was, looking excitedly at his fingers that move just like a reborn baby. He missed it so much, he started singing and drumming like he used to do. In the end, the man who hits him, lowers his mood and motivation, which happens to us a lot in life. We are sometimes full of inspiration and hope, and then something that happens, or someone we know, knows how to turn off our mood, our spirit, our hope, the light we have in our eyes, and therefore, his spirit, the light in his eyes, goes out again.

The negative people. They try to stop your success and make you miserable just like them..

Something that really hit me was when all of them started laughing. The first time I saw it was because they were all dogging on the lighted man, but then I saw the machine. It locks on to any amount of joy or inspiration or hope among them and squashes it down, but when they all started laughing it didn't know what to do. It got overwhelmed by the laughter... and it left. The machine is supposed to represent the conformity of society, but that would also include the fragility of said conformity. It was so, so, so terrifyingly easy for that machine to simply give up and move away when there was so much joy, so much happiness.

But all of it was just bullying aimed at someone who was different, and the moment they were squished in line it was all over. The entire Box had the means to freedom right then and there but didn't realize because they were too busy laughing at the one guy who should have inspired them to break free. So now they're all stuck with not even a light to illuminate the room, and the only one that got away was the new guy. To top it all off when one other guy gets his light back, tries to sing his hope out to the world, one would have wondered if the machine was going to come back or if it was even functional enough to do so. But then seconds later such line of thinking would be rendered meaningless when another guy hits the singer and knocks his light out again. The machine isn't even necessary anymore.

A perfect representation of why most of us just don't create anything after childhood. We get the light of ambition and curiosity beaten out of us.

The theme resembles Plato’s allegory of the cave. How enlightenment, innovation, and change is challenging, especially in a conservative society. Made to suffer for not conforming. Literally beaten down for being different, for sticking out, for growing. Once out of the cave/box if he returns, convincing others to leave and see what’s beyond is a leadership challenge. Plato suggests most will fight the change, some may even try to kill him. Good show!
