Otis DC Gearless 800 fpm express elevator with 'pie plate' selector

This is a great short little video showing a large Otis DC Gearless elevator motor machine with "pie plate" selector. You can see the pie plate which represent floors. The selector itself is basically a running model of the elevator which controls starting, stopping, direction selection, leveling, and signaling. The big wheel at the base of the selector is driven off a tape which is attached to the car and counterweight. In the beginning of the video you can see the large internal drum brake. The brake is electrically lifted, mechanically applied. They last a very long time because the motor does all of the work of starting/acceleration and deceleration/stopping. The brake is normally only applied after the car has stopped.

I’ve always been amazed at how quiet, simplistic and efficient those motors are. 👍🏻

The machine room is very clean, the equipment is clean and well cared for, and it is immaculate.

I love how quiet and smooth this equipment runs. No squealy vf drives, no jolt-y switches between speeds... really a joy to watch

Masterpiece of electro-mechanical engineering.

Back when Otis made good quality lifts, now they only make crappy GEN2’s

the days of equipment lasting this long, are gone! great video!

Those look like Otis 219HT machines. The braking mechanism on those machines is quite unique.

This is literally exactly what the Westin elevator machines used to look like. Just a lot more plates on the “pie plate” selector. Those are 1000 fpm tho.

Basically a giant version of a brushed motor.

I believe the elevators at Sutton Place here in Wichita still use this type of selector system. There is only one working, though, and it's a shame because it's only has a 2500-pound capacity. The freight elevator has been down for nearly a decade now, and that really complicated things when they had to rebuild the old R-11 chiller.

Electro mechanical logic. Reminds me of knife switch power board from 1939 i worked on.

They can also have new parts custom produced for a reasonable price thanks to new machining technologies and 3D printing technology as long as they have the original parts diagrams! :)

Definitely an express elevator, is it?

A real nice video of an Otis gearless traction motor. Do you know what the model number is?

One useless fact is our machines were green until the 1980s then they were all blue I think it was corn flowers blue
