To many, football is seen as a universal language, being able to unite and divide us while providing lovers of the sport indescribable highs and lows. One player that has no doubt experienced both extremes of the game is Uruguayan superstar Luis Suárez. Equally known for his accomplishments on the field as he is for his controversies off the ball, both have helped to shape Suárez’s more than colorful career.

Originally hailing from Salto, his family then moved to the outskirts of Montevideo where Suárez was picked up by local youth club Nacional. With his fiery personality and his hard to miss skills, Suárez was soon noticed by Dutch professional club Groningen. Determined to be a bona fide goalscorer, Suárez paved his way onto some of the biggest clubs across Europe including Netherland’s Ajax, England’s Liverpool and finally Spain’s Barcelona; where he has joined one of the greatest attacking lines of all-time alongside Lionel Messi.

Though Suárez's prosperous career has seen him lift a multitude of hardware for his various clubs, the passionate player has also experienced his fair share of negative limelight due to his bitting and diving theatrics. Constantly taking a look within himself and analyzing ways in which he can overcome his childhood hardships, this summer Suárez will continue to challenge all the critics as he proves to them that he is the best striker in the world; all while hoping to give Uruguay the Championship title.

Continuing with our lead up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the second chapter of our Destined series spotlights Luis Suárez’s journey to the top featuring interviews from Ricardo Perdomo and Martín Cauteruccio.

Dude came from a background of such necessity, you can see it on the field. He works his ass off considering his position, and he plays with this absolute live or die mentality, the dives, brutality, defensive urgency, absolute dedication to his club and teammates. Regardless of weather you think it’s justified or not, You can see him defending his dream, tooth and fist, every single match.

This is only part of the story. One of the biggest influences in his life was his childhood sweetheart, Sofia. She came from a nice family, while Luis' was poor and somewhat dysfunctional. She was everything to him. She helped provide balance and direction to a kid who had great ability but needed discipline. He loved her so much he even got a job sweeping streets in a busy night-club area so that he could pick up people's loose change and use it to take her out on dates.

Until one day when Sofia's family decided to move to Europe. Luis was losing his world. He struggled in life for a while until he realised that his only chance of getting back to this girl was to become a professional and move to Europe. He trained like crazy and eventually got his move to Groningen, Ajax, and then Liverpool. They reunited in Europe and he finally had the family that he wanted. But his wife's family lived in...Barcelona! And his transfer to Barcelona was about more than just football; it was the final destination in his lifelong dream. Even now, his goal celebration is to kiss 3 fingers, one kiss for his wife and one each for his 2 children.

And this is why Suarez can seem so crazy to outsiders. Football to him isn't "just a game". It is his ticket to life, it is the bridge to his children and his family. If you stand between him and the goal, you might as well be holding his family hostage.

You can talk about his biting all you want but he is a hell of a player and you can see how much he wants to win for his country

He is a real man. I like him. He is not just a soccer star, he is also a good role model. I started liking Uruguay because of him. I want to visit Uruguay one of those days.

I'm a Man United fan, it's easy to label him but if you keep your eyes on what he does with the ball, it's hard to deny him his place as one of the best attacking players in modern football.

One of the best 9 I’ve seen, his movements around the last 3/4 of the pitch are incredible, same with his control of the ball; probably a nightmare for a defender to keep track on.

My all time favorite sportsperson Luis Suarez. A loving husband, caring father, selfless player, one of the greatest striker in the football history, ever shining star on the football horizon, that's Luis Suarez. I just love to watch him play. He has excelled in the team he played whether it is Uruguay Ajax Liverpool Barcelona and now Atletico Madrid.
