Chloe Hopling, a Data Scientist and Research Fellow at the University of Sussex, shares her work on 'Forecasting vegetation condition indicators for pastoral communities in the Greater Horn of Africa'. She tells us how they have developed a python based pipeline, AstroCast, for forecasting vegetation condition using earth observation data and machine learning regression techniques.

"The goal of this project to use these forecasts in drought early warning systems to potentially reduce the human and financial impact of droughts in the region. Python is used throughout the AstroCast pipeline and the talk will cover the key steps in the pipeline, including processing geospatial data, forecasting with Gaussian process regression and data visualisation."

Dave Bottrill, a freelance web developer, shows us how we can speed up Python performance by 'Writing Python extensions in Rust'. "By using the Pyo3 and Maturin tools, a Python developer to create the required bindings and code, to start that journey to improved performance."

And lastly, Laura Mawer, Data Science Consultant from Datacove, shares a recap of one the biggest R & Python conferences of the year - EARLconf 2024.
