Philips B3X69A Tube Radio Restoration pt 2. Much, much better!

Показать описание
This restoration is being done under some tight time constraints, so I cannot claim that it is anywhere near my best. However, the objectives have been achieved: reception is clear on all bands, the chassis is well polished, and the torn grill cloth replaced.
I still intend to do some intervention on this one, but as shipping delays have become a norm here, I'll have to re-visit this one in the near future.
Hope you enjoy it.

An excellent transformation as usual Manuel. I liked you "Interlude" music, very nice. I'm interested to see what the secret sacrilegious intervention, will be🙂

Hi your videos are great and are very inspiring and helpfull. But there is one thing which makes me goose bumps :). In every video where you repair the front cloth (grill), is the cloth askew (not horizontally). Sometimes less but in this video more. It just catches my eyes. It is a triviality which probably does not see many people and you, but for me it is a no go. I would need to remake it immediately, because I cannot look at it :D

Restauration under time contraint is not easy. Yet it looks much much better. The 3 radios from the 30's ans 50's I have done so far got excellent reception in long waves. My troubles are with S, M and FM....being inland or on an island might influence the reception ? Have you done a rewiring of the ferrite antenna? These wires look so white :-). Thank you for all the tips and methods you share, it compensates for my ignorance.

Hello Manuel, that was a remarkable transformation. You were lucky to have a speaker that was compatible. The radio I am working on, a Tonfunk W346 USA, has four speakers, one loud speaker and three smaller oddly constructed speakers which I assume to be tweeters. They have a metal case and a piece of conductive film on a felt cushion and pressed up against the metal grill. The connections are made by another strip of metallic film and grounded to the speaker housing just under the grill. These were not connected when I received the radio. I connected them in parallel with the loud speaker but do not work. I can not find the exact wiring schematic for this radio but would like to replace these speakers. There is no impedance marked on any of the speakers but measure 3.5 ohms. Have you ever encountered this type of speaker and do you think I could replace them with a magnetic 4ohm speakers?

I'm still wondering what the "add-on" is that you keep talking about. It's not the most impressive radio you have worked on, but it is a nice one. That new grill cloth makes a tremendous difference! Looks great!

That "patina" is probably tar from innumerable cigarettes. It's very difficult to remove as it finds its way into the microscopic imperfections.
Shame about the speaker cloth not lining up properly. As you said, not one of your best.

Looks very tidy and I bet that speaker is no worse than the original.

If I would guess: if you're not building a bluetooth receiver into this one, you are probably going to include an FM tuner
