History of the 4Cs of Diamond Quality by GIA. The 4Cs – color, clarity, cut, and carat weight – were created by GIA to describe a diamond’s appearance and define its quality. Learn about the history of the 4Cs of diamonds. Diamonds are an expression of celebration and aspiration around the world. But like all things of value, diamonds require an accurate and objective way to determine their quality.
Before GIA created the diamond 4Cs and the International Diamond Grading System™, there were as many ways to describe diamonds as there were methods for evaluating their quality. But in the 1940s and 50's, GIA transformed the way diamonds were bought and sold by creating a common language for diamonds, establishing the methods and best practices used to grade diamonds, and issuing the first GIA diamond grading report as a way to consistently and accurately communicate grading results.
Learn why by creating the 4Cs and the International Diamond Grading System, GIA set the standard for describing and evaluating diamond quality anywhere in the world.

ALL of this is a lie. I'd buy a 1-carat diamond for $40....MAYBE $100 if I was pushed. But I'm not dropping a fortune on worthless common as dirt 'gemstone' diamonds.
