About OFF GRID with DOUG and Stacy
In 2010 we decided to sell everything and build a log cabin on 11 acres. We have lived in the log cabin for a decade now with no solar power or wind power plus zero public utilities. We live like the pioneers except in the 21st century. We post videos on social media to encourage people to return to the land and make a living with your family. We teach folks:
*Off grid living *Rain water catchment *Cooking with wood
*Food growing *Cooking from scratch *Raised bed gardening
*Food harvesting *fermenting the harvest *food preservation
*Holistic Remedies like Grandma made *How to make money and live this life
*storing food in a root cellar *DIY Build projects
*Animal Husbandry *Raising Chickens, Guinea, Turkeys and Ducks
All of our videos are made to empower you to break free and LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE!

Something you didn’t mention but I think is super important: Trying out these alternative light sources BEFORE the power actually goes out. Turn off all the lights one evening - act like there’s been a power outage - and try using these other sources of light as a dry test run. Do you have enough light? Did you find you liked one source of light more than another?

Too many times, preppers buy a bunch of tools and supplies, stash them away, and just assume they’ll work when they need to use them. That’s not a good assumption to be testing in the middle of an emergency.

I was in near tears with appreciation, Stacey. Everyone says, "Oh, just go get an oil lamp. It's so easy. You just fill it up and light the wick." Well, for those that have not practiced, it's not that easy. Thank you for actually showing us the steps. Please, keep teaching us how to live through what is coming.

We saw something today on CBS that made us sick. What you're telling us is absolutely true. We need to stick together and support our community before it's taken away. Thank you, for the invite into your home and your informational videos. We all despise doom and gloom videos. Sometimes, people need to heed the warnings that MSM imbeds into their articles.

We put outdoor solar string lights inside. We place the little solar panel in a sunny window. It lasts for several hours every evening unless we had a very cloudy day.

If you have never used an oil lamp there is a certain way to trim the wick and use the lamp. You don't just light them. They will smoke your house up. Lots of black smoke. You better fill'em trim' em and have them ready. We trim the top of the wick to a little half moon. Or half circle. With no little threads sticking out loose. This will cut way down on the smoke produced by the lamp. And they put out a good deal of heat.

Get more bang for your buck:
Put all your candles in glass jars or holders. It's safer and brighter. Place candles, or any light source, in front of a mirror. It will amplify the light.

Thanks, Stacy. I needed to go through my stash of candles and get organized. You're my motivation.

I've always had and use kerosene lamps. Sometimes I just don't want to use electricity and run lamps so I have a kerosene lamp for every room in my house. I love the ambiance of oil lamps. I live in town and live like I'm off grid with oil lamps, candles. One day I hope to live off grid and be self sufficient. Its the best life when you have survival skills. I also recently learned canning and dehydration. I'm a prepper!

Hi Stacy and Doug.
My grandmother was born on a farm in Mo. In 1905.
She had lived most of her life off grid. She had nice lanterns from back in the day. When I had gotten a couple years ago when she was still living, she said to cut a V in the middle of the wick and you'll have 2 bright points giving you more light. I am wondering if you or your Amish friends have heard of doing this? We have to large solar arrays in our yard that set up where we can switch between solar and the grid. The batteries won't last all night long, which is ok. The freezer stays fine until we get morning light. We have stocked up on all sizes of rechargeable batteries so we always have some extras charged. We have a few candles, but after learning about the bees wax here, I think I would like to get some of those too. I have a big glass rounded bowl that I have sand in the bottom for putting candles in. The candle wax that runs down just hits the sand for easy clean up when it's time for a new candle. I have used it for years. I had a bigger one we used in our cabin that provided nice light.
I love everything you teach about. All we can do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. We have been stocking up on all kinds of supplies, food and non food. Somethings will last our lifetime and probably get passed on to the kids. They will be set if they can live the country life. They were raised in the country and they didn't care for it much as kids, but now they are in their mid to upper 30's and might see country life differently if SHTF. I wish they could prepare more. But if SHTF the cities will be a big mess, especially if Marshall law is passed. They will be trapped and probably won't be able to make it out here. I have also started buying more seeds to have on hand for the garden. We get water from an old non working windmill that we set up with solar panels we built years ago, we run a DC pump. The only draw back is that we have to haul the water up the hill to our 2 1, 500gal cisterns. We keep a 1 000 gal plastic one full at all times and there is a 450 tank that catches water off our barn.
Anyway, keep up the good work and videos. ♥️🌻♥️

These techniques are definitely useful for people like us in hurricane prone areas; in 2017 after a CAT 4 hurricane decimated my area we were without power for 6 weeks! We have since bought solar powered lights with built in phone chargers, a hand crank radio, and a camp stove!

Stacy, we need many, many more people in the world like you. Not just your knowledge (which is so valuable) but your kind, sweet, caring nature too.
Blessings! ❤

Stacy you're such a doll. I'm extremely happy that you're sharing your off grid resources with all of us. There are so many things to think about, water, food storage with no power, animals, cooking sources with no power, laundry and the list goes on and on. I watch a lot of your videos and am learning a lot. My husband and I live in Salem Missouri and learning ti become more self sufficient. I thank you for caring and sharing so much valuable information. Bless you and Doug! Missouri Wrightchk

Put a mirror behind the lamps to reflect more light when and where possible.

Loved this! It actually reminded me of that many things I learned in my teenage years growing up rural. Kerosene lamps are a must. Run water in all bathtubs, jugs, anything to make sure there is drinking water. If it is the winter, and we have a snow or ice storm, collect the ice/snow and melt/boil for drinking and bathing. (Did this so many times!)

Mirrors reflect the light to make it twice as bright. A 3 fold picture frame with Mirrors works fantastic.

Doesn’t matter how frugal we are in the UK when using electricity. The less we use, the more the power companies charge for their daily standard fee. 😩

Great lighting video. In Alabama, I’m concerned about the extreme humid heat, with no way of cooling. I’ve lived here 53 years and can say, this humidity as I’ve gotten older, is more extreme than it was earlier in life. A shade tree, use to provide relief but no longer. This won’t be good for those with asthma problems.
