Are you team direct or indirect?
What’s the difference between direct & indirect paintjng?? Essentially they are the 2 main painting methods artists use.
DIRECT painting is when you apply wet paint all in one layer. This means you can quickly capture a subject & results in bold brushwork, loose textures, & vibrant colours. Think of impressionist or expressionist paintings eg. Van Gogh or Morisot. This method wasn’t available to artists before the industrial revolution as things like paint tubes, photography, and bright pigments meant artists could paint quickly & outside.
INDIRECT Painting is the classical method. Think of old masters like Vermeer or Gentileschi. You patiently build up layers of the painting which dry in between. This adds more luminance than you can get with one layer of paint as light travels through each layer and bounces back off the underpainting. Traditional artists were more limited in their materials so used the more technical indirect painting to academically recreate form/light.
Remember when working with layers it’s important to follow the 3 rules of layering oil paint to prevent cracking: 1 fat (more oil) over lean (less oil), 2 thick over thin, slow drying over fast drying.
The advantage in of indirect painting is it allows for greater control and precision, but direct painting is spontaneous, immediate, & captures the energy of a subject. The choice between these approaches depends on your style.
IMO the trick is to combine techniques from both methods to create a process that works for you. 👍
