I've bred two litters (though wouldn't call myself a "breeder"). I don't think puppies are ready to leave to their forever home before 7 weeks of age. At 6-7 weeks my puppies were only just weaned and still very attached to mom and dad.

I've let puppies go anywhere between 7.5 and 12 weeks and, for me, 8 weeks truly is the sweet spot. At that age they're independent enough that they're starting to require to see more of the world (which is something that a breeder might not be able to provide, especially with bigger litters). Additionally, leaving the nest before 7 weeks is illegal where I'm from.

Love this explanation! My dog is just going thought that sexual maturity stage and we are definitely seeing lots of development and breed related changes. His watch dog needs at home have really kicked up a level.

In some countries it is actually illegal to rehome puppies before they reach 8 weeks of age unless the mother is not present.

In Denmark it is illegal to remove puppies from the dog mom before 8 weeks unless something critical has happened. The breeders have the responsibility of doing a great job of socializing the puppies until the reach at least 8 weeks. This is not science but practical implementation of the socialization. Is your suggestion of rehoming puppies at the age of 6 or 7 weeks supported by science or only for practical reasons?
