These are the ‘forever chemicals’ you’ve never heard of — and they’re probably in your kitchen cabinet.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of ‘forever chemicals’ that are manufactured and used in a number of applications, including food packaging, water repellants, makeup, and even in drinking water.

The EPA says that exposure to 70 parts per trillion of PFOA and PFOS—two of the thousands of PFAS-containing chemicals—is potentially dangerous to human health.

I'm Legally Blind, and putting information in subtitles is not Accessible for me, and probably others.

I’ve been avidly recycling for years. I grew food and I conserved water but it was for nothing because the actual problems weren’t getting attention and now it’s too late. Been fun, see you after the reset. With love from a guy named Bobby

Those of us who keep track of these things have known about these for some time. From what I recall, these chemicals are added to “wrinkle-resistant” clothing, “stain-resistant” upholstery, and grease-proof coatings on fast food packages. So be wary of those things.

Currently a big PFOS scandal with 3M going on in Belgium 😕. At first they only talked about local contaminations around PFOS production sites but now it appears these are present in too high concentrations in almost all the rivers in Belgium.

I'm from the Parkersburg, WV area, home to the DuPont plant where they made Teflon (which includes C8/PFOA). There is a significantly higher risk of certain cancers and odd medical problems here, which DuPont tried to cover up for years. They sponsor everything here and create jobs, so people are split about them. Our town, here at the center of this mess, was home to the study where they discovered these dangers of PFOA, and DuPont/Chemours still tries to run away from responsibility.

Same with BPAs, their bonds are quite strong and the main negative side effect of BPAs is hormonal disruption.

The reason they don’t break down is that they don’t break down very easily.

Awesome. Did this guy do his report at recess?

I don’t think wide awareness has even begun on this. Once people realize the ubiquity and severity it will be an epic scandal and crisis.

I can already picture Kirsten Synema and Joe Manchin opposing this

Telling us it’s too late and that we have to learn to live with this chemicals

It's a problem around remote communities in Australia near military bases, PFAS from firefighting exercises got into aquifers and is now the subject of lawsuits and a massive cleanup. They have to use reverse osmosis treatment plants that pump water from the aquifers, purify it and return it but it's not enough.

Would be nice, if you make such a video, to put more information in it. It is an important problem, and all you get from the video is "dangerous" "everywhere" "strong chemical bonds"

My local town has to have their water delivered in jugs and the local river has a PFAS warning, all because a shoe company was dumping in the 1950s

Nothing sticks to Teflon. Not even the pan.

Genuine question: if the bonds between these molecules are so strong and not breaking easily, how is it breaking down in the body harming us?

I wonder what's worse, this chemical or drinking multiple sodas a day that have 150 percent of the daily value of sugar. I'm just pointing out it's not like us Americans actually care about health except for a select few.

We pushed for these new technologies that we didn't test for the safety of these products.

We need regulation to protect people, not enable corporation to profit at the expense of health and safety.
