CVPR 2020 Workshop on Challenges and Promises of Inferring Emotion from Images and Video

Abstract:
Many scientists and companies are trying to build AI technology to detect people's emotions. Some have already claimed success. In this talk, we’ll evaluate these claims in light of the latest scientific evidence on what emotions are and how they work. What does it mean to “detect” emotions in a human face, voice, or body? To answer this question, I'll introduce Darwin’s idea that species are biopopulations of variable individuals, and we’ll apply this insight to understanding emotion categories, such as anger, sadness, fear, and so on, as populations of instances that vary across contexts, individuals, and cultures.
