as #collegefootball continues to change with #conferencerealignment we take a look back at a conference that was torn apart in 1996 and just how crazy it would have been today.

do you want to see more shorts from me, or stick to the long form content?

Real ones brought back the Big 8, big east, and southwest in CFB 25

I wish we could go back to 10 teams per conference. Add in Utah and BYU to the Big 8 and that conference today would be amazing top to bottom.

Definitely remember this conference alignment as a kid, in the 1970s. Nothing like those old Oklahoma-Nebraska games.

Ironically it would go even harder this year with Colorado being good and Nebraska making a bowl game

I think people are confusing "Best Conference" with "Best teams in a conference". Would the B1G/SEC have better teams? Absolutely. Would the Big 8 have the best top to bottom evenly matched 8 teams in the country? Absolutely. Am I just someone from Nebraska who wishes we never left? Absolutely.

There we so many rivalries in this conference it was insane

Kansas st vs Kansas
Oklahoma vs Oklahoma st
Colorado vs Nebraska
Missouri vs Kansas
Iowa st vs Kansas st
Oklahoma vs Kansas
Oklahoma vs Missouri

and im not just talking any old rivalries, these were some of the biggest rivalries in college football

The old Metro Conference would also be dominant today

There's a very good reason why the MAC is popular

In the early 70's The BIG 8 was so strong that Alabama coach Bear Bryant began declining bowl invites if the opponent would be a BIG 8 school. Nebraska fans used to refer to Alabama as "The Crimson Cowards"

When I get EA College Football 25 the first thing I'll do is bring back the big 8.

If the old big 12 stuck together, all they had to do was add TCU and Arkansas to get to 14 and they would’ve been dominant in 2024, heck if they wanted to get to a larger number, go ahead and take Utah and BYU, if they need more, the Arizona School, super big 12 would’ve been lit and had plenty of media market. Okla, Ok St, Mizzu, Neb, Iowa St, Col, Texas, Tech, A&M, Baylor, TCU, Arkansas, Utah, BYU, Arizona, AZ St. total of 16.

Conferences are businesses, and they are more powerful than the NCAA. More teams equals more money.

Nebraska in 2024 Finally Snaps it's 8 year bowl drought and also wins a bowl game that same season

You need to do one with Georgia Tech and Florida State in the SEC, South Carolina in the ACC and Arkansas, Texas and Texas A&M in the Southwest Conference

Although in basketball, the Big 8 would be kinda mediocre this season, the conference title race would just come down to Kansas and Iowa State.

You I'm actually doing that with the Pac-12 now and so far we're off to a great start

So you’re telling me if the Mideast just hung on a lil longer. They might have been able to avoid the conference scales being tipped against them

Conferences shouldn't have more than 10 teams. And in today's football, the Big 8 could add schools like BYU and Utah to fill out a 12-game regular season slate without any dips in overall quality.
