The 60-70% golden rule for consistency 🎾
👉 Many people assume that the pros crack the ball on most shots.
👉 Pros play within themselves, and usually that means hitting the ball at around 60-70% of their full power
👉 By doing this, they reduce their unforced errors and build a solid base from which they can construct points

I’ve been sending this to people I play with because I never heard this before you posted it…and now I’m hitting so consistently in practice and in matches already I’ve seen the difference. Thanks again for such a great insight I never knew before…

An often overlooked part of hitting a rally ball vs a rocket is that going all out wears you out.. If you can hit a ball down the line and it’s a winner at rocket pace then fine you’re basically stanimal..however, line shots are lower percentage shots thus its better to wait for the perfect ball… so if you pummel the ball consistently it’s likely mid court shots which for a good player are easy to deal with. You won’t force him into a slugfest as he doesn’t need to, a good player can use your pace against you and take away time because you’re ego hitting. He doesn’t need to swing as hard as you to hit a hard ball back. This is why roger/rafa/djoko are so successful, their spin to power ratio is really good

If your hitting partner cannot contribute to cultivating a cooperative rally, it's time to find an additional hitting partner asap.

It’s a thing of beauty to watch Wawrinka and Alcaraz practice like that. Their strokes are so repetitive, consistent, and rhythmic. I’m sure many of us would love to be able to play at 60-70% of their level rather than our level.

PPS (Placement, Power, Spin), if it’s at the beginning, it’s the most important aspect of every ball, if it’s at the end, it’s the least important. It’s also the reason why players will train hitting certain shots by first hitting the spot they want to hit, then hitting the spot with spin, then hitting the spot with spin and power.

You also need to practice hitting harder to be consistent with high power shots though. 60% is good for most average club players due to the limited physical ability. If you are athletic it actually makes more sense to try hitting closer to 90% power. Same principle as for the 2nd serve: swing almost as fast, but with more spin to have a better clearance over the net. This will also give you much more consistency in a match. Nadal was doing exactly that. Stan and Carlitos here are just trying to get into a good rhythmn. They won't hit like this ever in a match.

hey Simon, not sure if you’ll see this given it’s 5 months late… but do you think this concept applies for the ITF level as well (the 60-70 percentage)? i’ve been playing the ITF tour and a lot of shots that work at, say, the high levels of USTA tournament level don’t always translate over and work when playing ITFs. guys can attack a lot of these shots that might normally work in levels below. it feels like you have to do more than maybe you think you do… so was curious for your opinion on this

thank you as always for the great content, all the best from the 🇺🇸

while i agree with this, i feel that this advice would hit home more in a real point

I have a different perspective! Flatter trajectory Vs Loopy trajectory.. Flatter trajectory needs lot more effort and will be needed when u r at the "No man land "area inside tennis court! But if u r behind the base line or even near the base line then go for loopy short!! To execute a loopy shot with high arc you need to reduce racquet head speed !! Higher trajectory ball will cause more damage than you think, it looks simple but bounce and spin makes sends heavier ball.. so that 60 to 70% is the exact effort u need to get there!

Having a pro level player hitting partner does wonders for your confidence and your fundamentals.

THIS!! If only more casual players would realise/understand this! You can't build consistency and fluidity in your game if every third shot is an unforced error lol

Do they play most points at 70% full speed in a match?

Nadal is the interesting exception. He hits harder in practice than in his matches

So do I wanna use this rule during a real match?

The only issue with that is the assumption that unforced errors occur because players try to hit as hard as they can rather than fundamental technical problems with their basic strokes. You can make almost any technically awful stroke 100% consistent by playing well within yourself, that doesn’t make it the correct approach. Players should focus on making sure they develop perfect technique instead.

This is very relative.... in thia video they are practicing this aspect but there many other aspects in the practices and matches..

This is only like 30-50% looks like a warm up

wow so 1 unforced era in training equals 3 in a match

so true

How does 1 unforced error in practice equal to 3 unforced errors in a match? What's the logic there?
