Top 12 Phil Collins Drumming Moments

Phil Collins belongs to a rare group.

Only a handful of drummers have become household names both on AND off the drums. (A group that includes drumming royalty like Dave Grohl, Don Henley, and Ringo Starr). And despite all his success as a bonafide pop star, Phil Collins has remained true to his drumming roots:

“I’m not a singer who plays drums. I’m a drummer that sings.”

This video dives deeper into Phil Collins’ work behind the kit. You’ll see & hear exactly what Phil played on breakthrough hits like “Easy Lover” and lesser-known progressive deep cuts like his early work with Genesis.

While Phil is a highly-celebrated pop artist, it’s time to shine a spotlight on his drumming!

Phil’s early Genesis work really goes underrated. Those syncopations and complicated time signatures really show just how talented he is as a drummer.

Not many people talk about the most amazing thing Phil Collins pulled off. He was singing well while he was drumming! Proof that this man was clearly super human.

Not only could he do this hyper technical stuff most people haven’t heard of, he could write pop songs heard by millions AND sing!!!

it’s hard to appreciate just how much of a musical genius Phil is.

His drumming on Foxtrot, Selling England By the Pound, The Lamb lies Down on Broadway and Trick of the Tail are out of this world. personal fav is during the keyboard and guitar solo of Firth of Fifth.

6:55 I first listened to Selling England by the Pound a couple months ago. Being born in 1992 my exposure to Phil Collins was In The Air Tonight, the Tarzan soundtrack, and a few 80's Genesis songs here and there. Selling England by the Pound was eye opening. Midway through the album I texted my dad and said "I had no idea Phil Collins could tear up the drums like that."

I knew Phil Collins first as a solo artist. But then after watching *The Genius of Phil Collins, * I was in shock, literally blown away by his insane talent. Now, I'm more toward his Genesis era.

I’ve always loved the intro to “I Don’t Care Anymore”. Hearing it on the local classic rock station (and later being told it was the same cat who wrote the songs for Tarzan), my mind was blown.

Phil was incredibly creative and had his very own unique sound and killer groove. The perfect balance between tight and loose. He always made it seem like it was dead easy for him. I'm sure he is the reason why many great drummers picked up the sticks in the first place.

As a non-drummer but Phil Collins fan, I always liked the sound of the drums on Duke's Travels/Duke's End

I was running a half marathon the other day and using The Cinema Show and Supper’s Ready in repeat as motivation to run faster. The drumming of Phil Collins is a true masterpiece

I am a former guitar player writing songs in Guitar Pro. I have really enjoyed these videos even though I don't have a kit. The videos help me realize what I hear in my head.

I barely noticed Phil's drumming in early Genesis. But Selling England was a different matter, and then Brand X sealed the deal: he became one of my favourites along with Bruford. Still shake my head that he became better known as a *singer* - and one of the world's biggest, at that!

I was in 6th grade starting drum lessons back in 1975 when an older friend let me borrow Wind and Wuthering. I had never heard of Genesis, certainly not Phil Collins, but after one listen through that was it. He opened my mind to all sorts of possibilities, and to this day Phil is one of my favorite drummers. His early work when he was just a drummer was incredible, and it will stand the test of time.

*Selling England By The Pound* is absolutely my favorite album of theirs. But definitely won't stop discovering their other songs, it's all masterwork.

Phil’s Genesis playing is the reason I started playing drums 30 years ago. This is a great video run through. BTW Cinema Show is a great example of when counting odd time sig in half can be helpful (1-2-3(&) -1-2-3(&))

Brandon just a superb video of a superb drummer. I am 72 years old and started playing the drums trying to play along to Phil's drumming. Could only muster the main groove in the easier songs. Brandon your knowledge of drum music reading is superb and adds so much to breaking these patterns down. You are amassing such a repertoire with these kinds of videos. If you do not join a super group one day soon you will become one of the greatest teachers I predict. Keep up the great work while staying so humble and courteous. Cheers. Bill.

Brilliant, Brandon. And with the reach Drumeo now has with younger players, I’m so happy to see them finding out what us [now] older players knew 40-50 years ago - Phil Collins was a jaw-dropping drummer. He made odd time signatures rock.
