What If Mussolini Never Joined The Axis? | Alternate History

Italy under Mussolini is remembered as one of founders of the Axis alliance between Italy, Germany, and Japan during WW2, despite this Italy is still often seen as one of the lesser members. But Italy didn't originally plan to create an alliance with Germany, in fact Germany was seen as a hostile rival for a time. Instead, Italy wanted to build an alliance with Britain and France, but especially the French, Mussolini dreaming of creating a Latin Bloc or Latin Axis that would span the territories of the former Roman Empire. Mussolini's failed French alliance, the Stresa Front, did not pan out, but what if that changed? What if in an alternate history Mussolini never joined the Axis?

"Mussolini was a depressed direction-less unemployed 20 years old"
Yup, that's pretty accurate about me and my peers 😂

The more I read about Italy, Mussolini and the build up towards the 2nd Great War, the more I came to the conclusion that Italy joining the Allies wasn't so farfetched. So, seeing this on my front page piqued my interest. After watching it, I'm actually surprised by how much sway Mussolini had and in the end kind of getting what he wanted with the Latin Bloc being the closest thing to a reformed Roman Empire he longed for.

If Italy didn’t join Germany in ww2, Italy and fascism would probably be viewed more positive today. This is my opinion without watching the video.

italy's presence in the mediterrenean was enough for britain to leave a lot of ships and overall air assets in the med, and while britain was paranoid about where italy may of resources prevented the regia marina to fully operate

This scenario seems to make a Anglo-German alliance likely if Britain felt threatened enough in Africa, would have been an interesting WW2.

Winston Churchill once said of Mussolini, “If I had been an Italian, I am sure I should have been whole-heartedly with you from start to finish in your triumphant struggle against the bestial appetites and passions of Leninism. But in England we have not yet had to face this danger in the same deadly form. We have our own way of doing things.”

Also remember that before Rome officially joined the axis, Mussolini actually threatened war with Hitler over Austria. Under Dolfuss, Mussolini gave War guarantees to the government in Vienna which while not Nazi was definitely fascist but certainly benign compared to what came later.

So the likely thing would have been if Dollfuss would have survived and not replaced by the relatively weak Schußnigg, odds are Italy would never have made The Pact of Steel with Hitler and rather Rome would have been implacable foes with Berlin. Remember it was only after The Pact of Steel that Hitler went about his military goals through Force

What if China and Rome had their golden age videos merged into 1 possible universe and they touch tips and become eternal rivals with neither falling until the modern day?

Too bad that this event never happens in our timeline. If that happened Italy won’t get humiliated and both Italy and Austria become greater than ever and Mussolini will become a great leader like Julius Caesar!

What if Russia expands their territories through the Korean peninsula? In my theory, the Russian turn the Kingdom of Joseon into the Baltic states of the Far East and the British will send their troops because doesn’t want to see Russia get the harbour which had never frozen and expand their might through the sea. And two pacts were spread apart between pro Russia and pro British in Joseon(Korea) for political & diplomatic struggle.

I'd love a part 2 to see what happens next, considering Germany and the Soviet Union still probably wouldn't remain idle for long.

I think Germany would be less likely to seek to attack France right out. As such an attack would mean the southern border would be at risk.

Also, national socialism is never made the same as fascism by Soviet propaganda

True Pierre Laval was trying to placate Italy a lot especially in the early 30s like with the agreements and meetings in 1934 and 1935.
