Security gaps found at luxury condo building in Uptown

Michael Jordan, Cam Newton and LaMelo Ball all own luxury condos valued at millions of dollars inside an exclusive Uptown building, yet a WCNC Charlotte investigation found The Trust has serious safety gaps that have allowed people who don't live there to easily gain access. In response, the building's management company is pledging significant security improvements.

The Trust, located on South Tryon Street, is marketed as a boutique, luxury residence, but Bryan Pierce knows first-hand that the building isn't always as secure as it should be.

"Everybody has to have a fob to get in there and still, that boundary is permeable," Pierce told WCNC Charlotte. "It's pretty clear that people can get in."

Pierce works for several high-profile clients who own condos inside The Trust. On a night earlier this year, an unknown man jumped out of an elevator inside the building and attacked the artist and builder.

"As soon as the elevator door opens, the guy comes at me," Pierce recalled. "The first thing I said was, 'Who are you? What are you doing here?' I ended up going to the hospital the next day."

Pierce said the four-and-a-half-minute tussle left him scratched and scraped up. He was also worried for the people who live in the building, as well as their families and friends.

So you have now made everyone in that building vulnerable to crimes

Here's a tip: Charlotte is currently a diverse and beautiful city. If someone in charge of doing things doesn't immediately assess the daily crime, gunshots, and murders, you will be putting lipstick on a pig. Everyone knows who is doing these things. Everyone knows where they live. Start addressing the problem by targeting that segment of the population, making them understand their responsibilities, and demanding accountability. If they can't follow those standards, unfortunately, evictions must follow. Start vetting the renters and stop allowing them to establish households that are the source of most of this. Stop pretending and ignoring it. Yes, poor people have rights. Working people, who pay their taxes for a better quality of life, have rights too. People who pay the taxes that allow others to be free to do whatever the hell they want 24/7 without doing anything for themselves while corrupting the lives and communities around them, are tired of it. The problem people need to do right or be gone or Charlotte will become the next line to be an urban ghetto that USED to be a nice place to live.

It is too bad that it takes something like this to get people serious about Residential Security. Of the over 50 Security Audits we have completed on Condominiums and High Rise Buildings, I can count on one hand the # of times we were not able to get into the building.
