Social Anxiety Disorder

In a world where being social is almost like a form of currency, many of us still struggle with social anxiety.

Shyness is the tendency to feel awkward, worried or tense during social encounters, especially with unfamiliar people. On the other hand, social anxiety disorder can be described as persistent, intense fear or anxiety about specific social situations. This causes us to avoid these situations because we believe we may be judged, embarrassed or humiliated, Or if we do endure these situations, it’s with intense fear or anxiety.

Some of that overlaps with shyness, but one of the key differences between shyness and SAD, is that for people with SAD, the level of avoidance, the intensity of the fear, and the impairment of functioning that it causes in someone’s life is severe. When it starts to hinder our ability to go to work or school or leave the house in general there’s even more reason to be concerned.

At the end we'll discuss 3 treatment options therapists use to manage social anxiety.

I'm an Introvert. I don't feel comfortable dealing with people in social environments. I prefer talking 1 on 1

Awesome video it really cleared up the differences between to the two. Seems like the most important first step is always having the courage to be honest with yourself about where you're at.

The only thing that’s been nice about the pandemic is not having to worry about social anxiety as much!

As soon as I leave my house or be in a place like a restaurant, hospital or any crowded place..my whole body starts to tingle with shivers, completely zone out and faint. Also left my job just cuz I can't cope with this sensation everyday....Now when I want a job I start to overthink way too much that I can't help it. Never been to a therapist cuz I have a feeling I will faint even there. Idk what it is, depression, anxiety, panic??

Great video! I would just suggest integrating a smaller intro, it's a bit long for people trying to get to the information of the title. I really enjoy the channel SciShow Psych, if you want/ like suggestions!
