WHO I AM

Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.

My books for adults include The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson.

I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, my books have been translated into twenty languages, and I have two new titles forthcoming in 2023 — more details on those soon.

I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a Youtube channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Always love to have a new Jen Campbell video to pop on while I'm working. The best calming companion to my work afternoon.

I can't wait to hear what you think of The Appointment. I've started reading it twice and loved it so much, but was never in the right mindset to finish it.

Loved this extra video it was lovely! I would also like to say that i have just finished the short story 'the beginning of the world in the middle of the night' and i have never read anything in that format before and i must say that it and the story was beautiful. It brought a tear to my eye so thank you for that x♡x

I couldn't put True Biz down! I'm so excited to hear your thoughts. (FWIW, the audiobook is cool too if that's a method that works for you because the author is recorded signing the ASL dialogue, and it's overlayed with the narrator speaking the signed dialogue so you get both at once!)

I'm about 100 pages into The Trees and enjoying it immensely. I have never read any other Percival Everett and it looks like they are hard to find here, but I'm going to look for them in future online orders.

I was immediately interested in The Last House when you described it. I paused the video and went to my library website and Scribd to look for it. Both had only the ebook version. I wanted to see if there was an audiobook, so I checked Audible. Sadly, I found a lot a comments talking about how people could not understand one of the narrators. Apparently, one of the narrators is hearing and the other is deaf.

Can’t wait to hear what you think of The Trees. It’s my #2 book so far this year. Chapter 64 is gutting once you understand what the author is doing.

I recommend Steph Green, a New Zealand Based author whose pen name is S.C. Green in the thriller genre.

I read an ARC of Breathe and Count Back from Ten as a sensitivity reader and really loved it! I'm always over the moon to find good chronic illness/disability representation, even more so when it's aimed at a younger audience. I wish there were more books out there like it.
I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Housebreaking and Mischief Acts: if that indeed has those Piranesi-vibes I'll be picking it up for sure!

The Appointment is absolutely not for everyone, but it is so shocking, dark, queer, and funny... One of my favourite reads of last year. I hope you enjoy it!

Hi! Have you read "Strangers I know", by Claudia Durastanti?
It is a memoir which also focuses about Durastanti's parents, both of which are deaf.
I read it in Italian, so I don't know if the translation is good, but I think you would enjoy it!

I agree with Claire, I would be kind of surprised if you would really like The Appointment. But you'll never know. Looking forward to your thoughts.
