78th Anniversary of Dmitry Shostakovich "Symphony 7 (Leningradskaya)" Premiere in Kuybyshev Opera House. Samara, Russia

In 1941, Dmitry Shostakovich, one of the greatest composers ever, together with his family was evacuated from sieged Leningrad (former St Petersburg) to Samara (former Kyubyshev), which is became a "back-up capital" of Russia during the WWII.

Being connected to Moscow with railways and Volga river, Samara was a good place to evacuate the factories there.

Yet Samara had a new big musical Opera House, so there also was evacuated the collective of Bolshoy Theater of Moscow.

Three of four parts of 7th Symphony, Shostakovich composed in Leningrad, but the final fourth part was written in Kuybyshev at the 27th of December, 1941.

Being evacuated together with the musicians of Bolshoy Theater orchestra, Shostakovich actually got a chance to perform it with one of the best symphony orchestras in USSR.

It is taken only two months between the release and very first premiere of 7th Symphony on a scene of Kuybyshev Opera House at the 5th of March, 1942.

In next few months, 7th Symphony was performed in Moscow, London, New York, Boston, Mexico and conquered the World showing all the nightmare of Nazi war, suffer but bravery and unbreakable belief of Russian people in their victory.

78 years later, exactly in the same place and time, at the 5th of March, 2020, the symphony orchestra of Samara Opera House performed the 7th Symphony again.

But I came to Samara, not only for the concert, but to research the life of Shostakovich in Kuybyshev and show the most significant "Shostakovich places".

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this glorious video. Definitely professional quality. I knew nothing about this wonderful composer. I saw you were disappointed on the views on today's live video so I went back and watched and listened to this one. I had missed it due to spending the day watching my retirement account dive yesterday with the stockmarket here in USA. I'm so glad I went back and watched it. Your video and Shostakovich's music brought tears to my eyes. I love learning about Russia from your channel and the Different Russia channel. Growing up in USA during the cold war, I was totally in ignorance about your great Country. Thanks again. I have watched you from the beginning and feel like I have watched you grow up. It's like you are part of my family.

I appreciate how much you love Shostakovich's music. I also appreciate how you get all the history and facts together for your videos, like a university professor preparing a lecture. Very impressive!

This is a very interesting video for me Sergey. Around twelve years ago, one of our BBC journalists, Jonathan Dimbleby, filmed a five-part documentary series in which he travelled from Murmansk to Vladivostock via many rural areas, cities and towns. He met the conductor Valerie Gergiev in St Petersburg who spoke about the Leningrad Symphony of Shostakovich, and how the broadcast performance in Leningrad was played by emaciated musicians because of food supplies being cut off. It was a powerful and poignant moment in Russian musical and social history. I didn't realise the work had been rehearsed in Samara. I thought the composer used a datcha in the countryside to complete the symphony, so I have learned something here. Your film here is well produced and uploaded. Thank you very much.

Sergey my friend, you are a master! Thank you for doing this video, it is genius! A great tribute too, really enjoyable! I also really enjoyed the concert, which I did not know you would show so much of and I am so glad you did! I like many Russian composers including Shostakovitch. In fact, Rachmaninoff and Shostakovitch are becoming my favorite Russian composers. I really like their approach. Their music tells the story. I love Russian orchestras too! I don't know what it is, but they breath life into the music! I usually hear American and sometimes German orchestras and they are fine, but there is just something about Russian orchestras that have that little extra something.

Thank you so much Sergey!

Fantastic video! They are top notch musicians and I like the war film footage to accompany the performance. If you don't mind, Sergey, I will post a link to this video in a couple of places where people may be interested in this video.

Beautiful video the one you uploaded. It gave an insight into the history of the illustrious composer who was Dimitry Shostakovich and his environment. His piano performance of his seventh symphony is a vivid testimony of his pianist status as well as of his personality.
Thank you so much for sharing it
