Our couch has been permanently altered since last night. My brother left a whole pound bowl of goldfish on the floor and no one noticed she ate them till she was throwing up on my shag carpet and the couch at one in the morning.

Take carpet fresh and cover the entire couch. Soak it in pet cleanser, leave overnight while soaking with pet cleanser spray. I mean really get that sucker wet. Extract. Do it again, extract.

I got a couch from my neighbor that had the same issue. It took me 48 hours. But after that the couch glaringly smelled like fake lavender. Eventually smelled normal

I'm going to edit this and put a note. Pet cleanser and carpet fresh MUST be left on overnight. A full 12 hours minimum before the final two extractions. Extract until the water is clean. I did a layer of wet, then covered with carpet fresh. Let it sit for 12 hours, took a vac to it, did it again. Soaked the couch with the pet cleanser and then covered with a layer of carpet fresh. Left it for another 12 hours. Then extracted multiple times. My 48 hours included drying time. That means not getting on or touching the couch, letting pets on it, etc. only thing I would do differently is probably use a plastic cover to seal between dwell time and then extract between both dwell times.

I just thought I should put in context because we have some seriously crazy people commenting on this.

1. I dont have children or a dog. But if you read very carefully I mention the previous owners of the couch had dogs. I am also a poor college student and take whatever I can get.
2. The important note here is using a steamcleaner aka extracting.
3. Its up to you whether you consider it soiled through or worth a clean. In my case, my couch was totally worth the clean.
4. The lavender scented carpet fresh was the only one they had. It was less for cleaning, more for helping clean up the smell.
5. Pet cleanser has enzymes that help breakdown pet, human stuff so it's easy to get rid of in fabric. For most messes, they can be one time or surface level.
6. You can take apart most couches replacing the foam and running the fabric through multiple washes. Consider this an option prior to extracting.
7. I used to work in used car reconditioning, I've encountered vehicle upholstery way worse than any couch you could recollect. The same people complaining about buying a new couch should see what the interior of their used car looked like prior to it being cleaned. I've cleaned blood, mold, urine, feces, vomit, and all sorts of human/pet/? Fluids. Even tar.

i swear on enzyme cleaners! my cats peed on my bed for weeks, i tried everything to get out the smell (more specifically so THEY couldn’t smell it & repeat) and nothing worked until enzyme cleaner. i bought a spray bottle and used around 1.5L of the stuff, completely soaked the mattress focusing on the stained parts and then let my mattress air dry over 24hrs. the following day i drenched the stained parts again and lightly misted the whole mattress, then once again dry for 24hrs. i’ve had no issues with them peeing there since and no smell!!
