Song is "#8 regret" from Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion
//////////EPILIEPSY WARNING AFTER THE 1 MINUTE MARK//////////
This is where the timelapse section starts. It's gonna go REAL fast.
Here are some clips and images that I've gathered while I was working on my latest Trumpet Boy meme for the Splatoon Meme Zine!
When I joined this fanzine, I KNEW I wanted to work on a meme format that I was familiar with, so a Trumpet Boy was one of the first ideas I thought of. I also told the mods that I *could* make a video adaptation if I have the time to do it, and they were totally cool with it 👌 Thank you Lilo & Ray 💖
I started production on this as early as December 2020 and finished the illustration and video around February 2021. As it turns out, I REALLY needed as much time as possible to work on all of it! The illustration was made for the zine, but the video was made for fun once I finished the illustration version.
I knew I wanted to make this video with the biggest ensemble of characters yet, but it turns out it's really complicated to string it together into one video! Final Cut Pro's compositing/chroma keying effects would break under pressure if there are too many green screen characters on screen, so that's why I would insert a few characters at a time and then export a "baked" version of the video. I kept repeating the process until I got everyone on screen.
The result is an extremely chaotic scene, especially towards the end when EVERYONE IS HERE! It's a huge mess, but it's definitely fun to look at. Almost every meme video I've made has some sort of catch or "punchline" at the very end. It's usually something unexpected and hilarious at the same time.
But for this video, I really wanted to continue a trend that started with the Spider-Verse Underground Band by having at least ONE character in a frame-by-frame animation. So I thought of having a Sanitized Octoling pop out of the Game Boy Micro's screen, which was definitely inspired by The Ring, so I was worried that my punchline was actually going to be a jumpscare.
But there is ample time for viewers to realize "oh crap!" before you hear her scream. The video doesn't have a loud sound warning, so the intensity of her scream had to be scaled back so that I wouldn't bust anyone's eardrums. In retrospect, I should've added a loud sound warning anyway, cuz I had every chance to do it before the final release but I didn't do it anyway :/
When I showed this video to the artists in the Splatoon Meme Zine, they all seemed to love it, so I hope you enjoy it too! And I hope this video gave you some insight into my work process!
PS: There's a funny story behind the April Fool's version. I straight up asked the artists in the fanzine "what if I posted my trumpet boy video early, but it never begins." And Lilo (the host) was like "OMG PLS DO IT." And that was how I trolled my YouTube fanbase for a day afdjslkfjlsdf
