The way I understand what he's saying is, wing chun and others relies on technical proficiency to bring victory rather than the higher level of overall conditioning that is required for "sport, contest, long drawn-out events" having said that we train both. Applied wing chun circle training and other aspects require sustained cardio, body conditionings and strength of will. Me and my crew run after every class. Every class has a stretch, power training section as well as a short cardio element. What other schools do I have no idea, but most of the guys I train with try and keep themselves conditioned. Btw, I'm 68, age doesn't mean conditioning and cardio and strength training goes out the window. But the premise of Applied Wing Chun is get it finished fast.

My eyes were opened even before my military service and law enforcement career, when I saw Paul Vunak’s video on attributes. Techniques don’t win a fight, attributes do. Strength, speed, power, conditioning, pain tolerance, will power, experience, mental focus, flexibility, etc…the person who has developed these will win with only one technique against a person who practices a thousand techniques but hasn’t developed attributes.

This is why at the end of the day, styles are not as important as the person. Combat sports tend to be very effective because training in them develops more attributes. Practitioners who ignore attribute training do poorly in real fights. Again, it’s why you see a construction worker with no training, knock the crap out of a black belt. Many traditional martial artists need to understand this to ensure it doesn’t impact their training. Practicing forms, techniques and drills are fun. Most attribute training isn’t fun, in fact it sucks.
