Peter Gabriel looked much younger than 36 on the cover of So. He still had very boyish good looks. It was never going to last forever. By his fifties he looked like the intellectual professor of rock he had always been even in the days when he was pretending to be a pop star pin-up.

I don't think he stressed himself out. The way he aged was most probably in his genes, it is for most people. The truth is he looked very young for a long time. He was 36 on the cover of "So" but he could have passed for a man ten years younger. So when he did start to age it happened very quickly.
