Synaptic transmission is the process by which neurons communicate with each other in the nervous system.
During synaptic transmission, an electrical signal (action potential) travels down the axon of the presynaptic neuron and reaches the axon terminal. This triggers the release of neurotransmitter molecules from synaptic vesicles into the synaptic gap (synaptic cleft). The neurotransmitters then diffuse across the synaptic gap and bind to receptor proteins on the membrane of the postsynaptic neuron.
