Labour Party amendment to impose meaningful Brexit vote defeated
Показать описание
Theresa May saw off a Labour Brexit challenge tonight but is staring down the barrel of another humiliation after Tory MPs accused her of a sneaky bid to take no deal off the table. Conservative Eurosceptics including Jacob Rees-Mogg declared they will defy the PM and abstain in a crunch vote on her EU plan - condemning it to a likely defeat. The signal came despite Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay (pictured right) desperately trying to reassure mutinous MPs that no deal is not being taken off the table, warning that Brussels will conclude the UK's 'resolve is weakening'. Mrs May has been pleading for more time to secure concessions from the EU on the Irish border backstop that could win MPs' support for her deal. But her efforts have been derailed by a bitter spat with the Eurosceptic ERG group over the text of the government motion. A Labour amendment to force her to bring her deal back to the Commons by the end of the month regardless of whether negotiations are complete was defeated by margin of 16.
