The hardest part of the game is getting past the title screen. IT'S AWESOME

The usual arrangement for a NES soundtrack was to use the two pulse channels for melody, the triangle channel for the bass and the noise channel for percussion/drums. The DPCM channel wasn't used. Then came SunSoft and turned this entire convention on its head. They delegated the bass to the DPCM channel, the two pulse channels for the melody (either two voices at a time, or using one track as the echo of the other one), and the noise + triangle channels were used together for the drums: the attack portion was done with the noise channel and the decay with the triangle channel, with a downwards pitch bend usually. That's why the kick drum, snare drum and the toms are so realistic (at least in the scope of NES music) By the way, the Simmons SDS-V drums (you know, with the hexagonal pads), used a very similar approach to synthesize their sound. (they had an analog sine wave generator instead of a 4 bit triangle, though)

This was written by Naoki Kodaka, the same composer as the Batman (NES/Genesis) soundtrack. Such incredible talent. Batman is one of my favorite NES soundtracks - up there with Bucky O'Hare, Megaman, etc.

What a tragic story we have behind this... the person who programmed the audio driver died many years ago due to sudden illness. R.I.P.

<3 <3 <3 Kodaka then began to tell me about one specific sound programmer at Sunsoft.
Kodaka: Nobuyuki Hara was the main sound producer for Batman, Battle Formula, and others. He later left Sunsoft, but he was an exceptional sound programmer. His early death in his mid-20s from a sudden illness was truly a tragedy. He would say to me, “Kodaka, wait till you hear the great sounds I’ve just created! Please write a good song for them!” Then he’d wait patiently at my home office until the dawn as I composed, and when I handed the sheet to him he’d take it and say “leave the rest to me!” as he raced back to the office. I have many wonderful memories just like that. When he showed the finished song to me and I gave my seal of approval, a huge expression of happiness welled up on his face.

I’ve been coming back to this soundtrack ever since I played this back in the day and it still absolutely SLAPS. Stage 2 is, hands down, one of the best all-time NES songs out there.

One of the best soundtracks ever. I have it recorded on cassette tape. Hats down. They knew how to create music back then.

I've heard many NES soundtracks, and to me, nothing touches this one. I started this in my emulator, and was shocked by the depth this music has. Heck, even other NES legends don't have this kind of depth. I'll definitely need to pick up a real copy if I ever come across it for a decent price.
Sunsoft was legendary with the NES soundchip, so I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised.

Всегда любил эту игру, одно музыкальное сопровождение чего стоит - все музыкальные темы пробивают до "гусиной кожи" и сам сюжет

Amazing OST. The boss battle theme in this game always felt so menacing and intense.

It is a fucking masterpiece. I played this game in '94 ish and it stuck with me. I had the whole soundtrack recorded on MC casette. It is overtime, ultimate example that we are capable of doing great thing out of nothing. How many of the current soundtrack do you expect to remember in 20 years? yup.

STAGE 2 THEME .... goddamn .... first verse wow, then a second verse ( are we sure we're still on nes) then the THIRD VERSE ( how is that even possible on nes ). today games sure lack this kinda theme!
