In my Airforce days, late 1970s, I was an avionics tech working on T-33A trainers.
They had four bays for machineguns in the nose, but no guns fitted, instead having big lead weights to preserve weight&balance Later the huge vacuum tube radio was replaced by a tiny solid state unit, needing another weight installed. W&B is critical.

As a young pilot I carried a small boat anchor when flying a sailplane because of my weight. When flying an OH-58 in the Army some years later I still needed the extra weight when solo without the armored seats because of being too light weight. I had an ammo can with a bunch of lead weights unit. The ammo can didn’t alarm my paxs, contained the weight and was easy to store if not needed. As I got older that problem disappeared 😊

It was what I thought. I immediately had visions of flying model airplanes as a kid. For extra weight, we'd sometimes tape a coin to the front. 🤣

The early 747s even had depeleted uranium as counter weights if I remember correctly...
