Hyundai went for a defensive strategy and absorbed the impact at the A pillar-fire wall joint.. While others try to get away by glancing off

IIHS News Release | June 30, 2022

ARLINGTON, Va. — The all-new 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, an electric small SUV, earns a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

To earn either of the Institute’s two awards in 2022, vehicles must earn good ratings in six IIHS crashworthiness evaluations, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. They must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

For the lower-tier TOP SAFETY PICK, at least one good or acceptable headlight system must be available. For the higher-tier TOP SAFETY PICK+, good or acceptable headlights must be standard across all trims.

The Ioniq 5 meets all the requirements for the higher-tier award. Its standard front crash prevention system earns superior ratings in the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. The SEL and Limited trims come equipped with good-rated LED projector headlights, while the SE trim comes with LED reflectors that earn an acceptable rating.

The award applies to vehicles built after December 2021, when Hyundai made changes to the front seats that could affect the head restraint evaluation.

If IIHS would offer a more refined scoring system (e.g. 100-point system instead of just a 4-point system of good/acceptable/marginal/bad), this car would be below average among its competitors. However car manufacturers wouldn’t want their potential buyers to be more informed than they are now.

That buckling scares me... But i think that's just energy dissipation.
By the way, when will the next set of updated side tests be released? (Midsize cars)

Although the majority of the passenger compartment and drivers area seems OK, just like in my accident, the drivers left leg and foot would be mangled. It’s unacceptable that they don’t put a cage around these areas to protect the occupants feet.

I would love to see a video on how you built the barrier to slam the cars into. I bet the engineering was pretty awesome.

@IIHS Do you have any plans to test the 2022 Toyota Tundra? It was redesigned for the 2022 model year and I would like to see how it holds up in comparison to the previous generation.

@IIHS Do you have any plans to test Cadillac CT5? I'm driving CT5 now, and I want to walk away any types of Institute's crash tests.Thank you!

IIHS really needs to factor post-crash extrication into the evaluation. There is severe deformation of the driver's door and the retractable door handle sinks several inches inside the door. Can the door be opened from outside at all if the driver is incapacitated? This is an atrocious result and it's unacceptable that IIHS rates it the same "Good" as similar-sized Audi e-Tron which has no door deformation at all.

how did this car get a good rating? The A pillar is clearly at its limit. A mile or two faster and the passenger compartment would be severely compromised

Will the doors open after the crash? They look badly distorted.

Can you test the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Regular Grand Cherokee?

That A pillar needs to be stronger. If the crash was at a higher speed it would definitely cut into the passenger cabin which will cause broken feet broken ankles broken knees and dislocated hips.
