I love summer. On Midsummer when you go out, and you have luck, you can hear the nightingale singing her wonderful melodies.

Sir I have a doubt. My name is Ambikesh and I live in India,

Doubt : Why two bottle caps when allowed to float in water get attracted ?

I think its gravity as bottle caps bend the water as same as in space time. I think you should try once . Want your opinion too

While your analysis is correct, it supposes an impossible type of encounter (180 degrees). That would require an exact parabolic orbit, which would entail plunging below the planet's atmosphere (and usually its surface also, if there is one), to get a strong enough pull for the 180 degree orbit. More likely the encounter meets the planet orbiting the SAME direction abound the sun, not opposite, as the planet (especially if it has prior such encounters), & the angle of orbit around the planet is but a small fraction of the maximum possible half-turn (a hyperbola that is nearly a straight line), leading to much smaller increases in energy, because the difference in the velocity between the craft & the planet is so small. You do not consider another constraint: it's not just the energy you want, but also the direction of the craft's velocity must end up in to reach its target. This & the gravitational strength of the planet force the trajectory to usually to be nearly a straight line where the gains are small.
If this were a game of tennis, the racket is moving mostly sideways, & the ball is approaching slow relative to the racket, almost parallel to the plane of the racket. It bounces with a glancing blow, being deflected little. Most of the racket's motion is sideways, which contributes nothing to the ball's speed.
This scheme is also used to DECREASE energy to reach planets inside the earth's orbit, such as for the mercury orbiter. This is much more difficult as the delta-V's required closer to the sun get huge. To get a craft slow enough to enter orbit about mercury requires multiple such encounters with mercury, Venus, earth, spanning many years.

Hello again professor. Love these videos. I have 2 questions about potential and kinetic energy if you dont mind me asking. One of the questions is about rubber bands.

The first question is... Can you think of any system that gains potential energy while also expending kinetic energy at the same time? To me this is the heart of the problem of perpetual motion. I know looking for perpetual motion is a fools task but i do find it interesting to think about.

The second question is. If i stretch a rubber band, i am giving it potential energy. Does this mean that the rubber band weighs more because it has a higher energy content, since Energy = Mass?

As always, thank you so much for everything. We love you very much and the impact you have had on our lives is immeasurable.

I was outside, but no nightingale anymore. I was wrong, this bird stopped singing at the beginning of June. Midsummer seems to be the day of errors. :)
