What Is A QNAP NAS?

QNAP's Network Attached Storage(NAS) are systems that consist of one or more hard drives that are constantly connected to the internet. The QNAP becomes your backup "hub", or storage unit that stores all your important files and media such as photos, videos and music. Imagine it being your external hard drive, but rather taking it everywhere, it is placed at home and accessible for you and your family to use at anytime and anywhere.

What's the performance for the DAS using RAID 0 and 7200 RPM drives?

I'm curious, if the device fails one day and I had two disks in RAID1 (mirror) mode, will I be able to access the files on the disk if I connect one of the RAID1 disks directly to my PC through SATA port?

I'm asking because I've heard that many NAS solutions have proprietary storage algorithms and so you cannot access your files directly if the NAS controller itself suddenly dies. One such a bad example was Drobo that had a tendency to stuck in reboot loop and you had to replace the device itself, but you could not access your data while waiting for the replacement to arrive. So, proprietary NAS is bad.

I first saw this item described as *_"Direct_*_ Attached Storage"._ Then I saw this video and saw it described as _"NAS Expansion"._ Will it do both? IOW, can I attach it directly to a PC without a NAS?

Thanks for the comprehensive review.. I have a question...what do you think of hooking up this with a raspberry pi 5 using usb 3 as a cheaper alternative for a home media server? Thanks in advance

Hi, can you recommend me any other device substitute to tr-004? I mainly use it under Jbod mode with 2 hard disk connected to my pc to provide me hd storage expansion.

1st Tr-004 crashed after 3 years and second one after 18 days.

excellent video, thank you! question, my use would be simply playing my movies & tv shows via my mac mini on plex server. there would be no external use, just in house. i’m a first time user as i now just have some external ssd drives attached to the mac min for using plex. this das appears perfect for my use or am i missing something? or should i just go with the upcoming 4 bay ugreen for double the price?

I probably wont get an answer to this, but Ill ask anyway.

I have it set to hardware RAID1 with only two drives so I have the option to add two additional drives down the line. However, I would like to know if I add the two drives of the same size, will they automatically be configured to RAID1 or will it wipe out my existing array? This is extremely important!

I read somewhere that you need to start with the end capacity in mind (can't add drives later without rebuilding the raid) is that true? also if in raid 5 or 10 if a drive fails how do you go about replacing it? are you going to release your speed test video review on this soon? waiting for your review before I purchase this to back up my synology nas -> then connect to computer to backup to backblaze

Will it un mount the drives and shutdown gracefully if the host QNAP NAS does the same because of an UPS signal of low battery?

Can I put my own cpu inside it? Like a 4x4 intel nuc board or a raspberry pi?
