In this video, Vehicle-Virgins teaches you how to downshift and rev match in a manual car!

We at Vehicle-Virgins™ are a dedicated group of college students here to help you make one of the most important decisions of your life: buying your first car. What sets us apart from other consumer review organizations is our perspective of review; we approach the cars as any kid would, not only as a professional automotive journalist would. We take into account real-world decision factors such as budget, reliability, safety, and maintenance, but we also rate cars on their appeal to a younger market. At 19 and 20 years old, we have spent lots of time looking for our first cars, and we know what appeals to us as well as our friends.

Our mission is to guide individuals in the right direction for their first car. Vehicle-Virgins reviews popular cars that young buyers are in the market for and helps them decide if the car they are looking at is a good choice.

We are lighthearted individuals who are passionate about cars and hope you find our reviews both informative and funny.

Cheers.

If you down shift from 6th to 2nd on the highway you will first notice your rpm's spike to some outrageously high number, then you will hear a very loud clunk, your car will buck upward then you will notice that your trans is tumbeling down the highway while giving you the finger, and depending on make an model it may be giving you both fingers

Just want to say that this video and the other one about having to drive a manual saved my life! Recently just bought a Mazda rx8, my first stick shift, and while I had the general idea, the basic and intense knowledge I needed to drive it and not screw up the motor was not there. So thank you!

this video actually helped a lot, never knew you had to rev the engine a bit when downshifting

I don't know about the US, but in the UK putting your car into neutral while you're still driving is an instant fail on your test because you are not in full control of the car while it's rolling. The accepted method is to either downshift to first, or stop fully from second before changing to first as you stop (but not releasing the clutch).

In my experience, the best way to come to a stop if your already in a higher gear wether it be 3rd or 4th is to slow the vehicle down using the brake (without cycling through the gears) & right before you come to a compete stop, engage the clutch so you don't stall, & while the clutch is engaged & with your foot on the brake put it back in 1st gear, & prepare for the next take-off. If your going through light city traffic, & you're in lets say 4th, just listen to your engine. You'll notice it will start to shake or make a vibrating sound. just throw it down to 2nd or 3rd, you'll know what gear to use based on how fast or slow your going. No need to get fancy. It'll save you a lot of money down the road.

Awesome video as usual VV !! Next up should be Heel-and-toe and double-clutch downshift (not that it matters on new cars though). Top it all up with the ultimate technique of Double-clutch-heel-and-toe, which is the old school way of heel and toe'ing on non synchro boxes. Videos like these should get  promoted everywhere as people are seriously losing out on driving pleasure and being brainwashed into thinking that fast acceleration and lap times is what will give you more pleasure. You can bet that I find a manual more fun in every situation over a DSG or automatic, even traffic :) Good on you guys for preaching it how it is !!

so when you rev match you give a bit of gas while you press the clutch and shift from a gear to another ?

You explain it so much better ! Thank you! I’ll try this instead of putting it into neutral every time.

I'm 15 and almost old enough to get my learners permit, surprisingly, a lot of the material covered in this video is familiar to me simply because I spent a lot of time playing Forza with manual transmission on. I know it sounds dumb, but rev-matching and driving smoothly seems more possible especially when I have (in theory?) experience with it in a video game. Anyway, great video!

The whole video is wrong. Yes rev matching is an option.. but you shouldn't be promoting it over just casual braking..I feel sorry for all those gear boxes in the US. Because some idiot is going to start rev matching ridiculously instead of using their brakes.

Just do what normal Europeans do...Say you're in 4th gear in a 1.6 engine..doing about 45..brake..up to 20mph when the revs are at 1000rpm..then shift to second. Its not necessary to rev match all the time.

Will it make the transmission more prone to break down? I am just curious about this technique. I normally brake and downshift at lower speed and rpm.
