Together, Gen. General Jim Mattis - General Jim Mattis, US Marine Corps (Ret.), is the Davies Family Distinguished Fellow, after having served as the nation’s 26th Secretary of Defense in the administration. Before retiring in 2013 he was the Commander of U.S. Central Command, directing military operations of over 250,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, Coast Guardsmen, Marines and allied forces across the Middle East. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead, and the co-editor of the book, Warriors & Citizens: American Views of Our Military.

Stephen Kotkin - Stephen Kotkin is the Kleinheinz Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, senior fellow at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and the Birkelund Professor in History and International Affairs emeritus at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs where he taught for 33 years. His research encompasses geopolitics and authoritarian regimes, both past and present, and is a renowned biographer of Joseph Stalin with his books Stalin: Volume I: Paradoxes of Power, 1878-1928 | Hoover Institution Stalin: Volume I: Paradoxes of Power, 1878-1928 and Stalin: Waiting for Hitler, 1929-1941 | Hoover Institution Stalin: Waiting for Hitler, 1929-1941.

as per the discussion around the 10 minute mark, 40 years ago I was an undergraduate math major who was interested in history and spent several hours reading historical works including spending a rainy winter afternoon in the basement of the stacks reading the Nuremberg Trial transcripts. (These days the easiest way to do that is to point your browser at the Harvard Law school web site and better indexed than the 40 or so volumes of the original transcripts)
