I grew up with this song. Alley cat is not just a theme but it typifies the way the cat walks. When I close my eyes and listen to the original piece the cat has a gate swaggering, self-confident and arrogant. I think this piece was written with the cartoon character Top Cat in mind. To my ear when you change the Rhythm or the notes it becomes just another piece of music rather than the description of an alley cats walk. This is not meant as a criticism, to my ear it's just not the same tune.
