The sand mats aren't safe. It can cause injuries on their feet and tails and it easily scrapes off, which they can ingest.

The carpet is also bas because you can't sanitize it and it *harbors* bacteria.

Your best bet is paper towels or a NON-ADHESIVE shelf liner or even cutting a yoga mat down to size.

As for sanitation: one part water to one part vinegar and put it in a spray bottle or something and wipe down your enclosure as needed and works fantastic for getting rid of poop smells. Because they're nasty as hell.😅

Bro said sand isn’t safe when that’s literally what they live on😂😂 and then recommend a mat which can literally rip their nails out

I agree with your calci sand idea however regular sand won't cause impaction if the animal is well heated and hydrated

I love when people forget that these are animals that come from the wild naturally. There’s no paper towels, tile, or carpet in the outback. I know, crazy right? Loose substrates are completely fine for bearded dragons and basically everything else. If you’re feeding your dragon in a bowl, like you should, then they won’t ingest enough substrate to cause impact. The only risk would be letting crickets in the enclosure and they accidentally go in the enclosure and ingesting it. And plus they would get lots on enrichment from a lose substrates such as burrowing. Mine digs all the time. Yeah the pores will get clogged but they will be cleaned when they rub against rocks that should have in the enclosure anyways. Paper towels work best as a quarantine solution but not long term.

The sand mates are actually terrible. If you go by Dr Jonathan Howard the world expert on bearded dragons then you do want to use sand. Playsand and organic topsoil mix are hands down the best substrate.

You can put sand in a bearded dragon incloser you should use vita sand or 70% topsoil and 30% playsand you just need good husbandry

There is downsides to loose substrate like sand and mats, mats have a chance to get your lizards nails stuck which can be ripped out causing bleeding. As opposed to the loose substrate which doesn’t have this issue. However if your bearded dragon eats food on the sand it can eat sand and this can cause blockage which will be an expensive pet visit since they need to get their stomach cut open.

We have used shelf liner for years. It comes in different patterns and is big enough to cut exactly to the tank size. Easy to wash. Plus we place newspaper on the side they like to poop on.

I got some flimsy welcome mats at the dollar tree and I'm using those for bedding that way I can just take them out and throw them in the wash!

Non-silica sand and coconut fiber is what I use because the chance of an adult beardie getting impacted is low

Okay so as someone who has qualification in wildlife, domestic animals and others as well as owning them (here in Australia you have to have a reptile licence to own reptiles)…all of the things you have listed aren’t good for bearded dragons. Everything you listed causes either compaction or can rip their claws out…bare bottom tanks aren’t a good option either. Coconut fibre or peat moss is the best option and is the cheapest of all of them.

Because their pours can get clogged it’s also best to have rough things for them to rub their belly on which coconut fibre is the absolute best option

Washed play sand from the Hardware store. 12 bucks and I had enough for a 75 gallon tank. NEVER had an issue. I'm pretty sure they're originally from the Australian deserts

I'm new to the game and I just bought my bearded dragon Australian sand that has pebbles and all kinds of stuff in it and it seems pretty good but I can see that it's going to be a pain in the ass to clean up
