HOW CAN I MAKE MORE TORQUE FOR TOWING? HOW TO ADD TORQUE TO YOUR 4.8L. IS A STROKER BETTER THAN BOOST? IS THERE A REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT? IS A STROKER 383 BETTER THAN A TURBO 4.8L FOR TOWING? WHAT IS THE BEST COMBO FOR TOWING? HOW MUCH TORQUE DOES A 5.3L OR 6.0L MAKE COMPARED TO A 4.8L? HOW MUCH LOW-SPEED TORQUE DOES A 408 STROKER MAKE? HOW MUCH BOOST DOES IT TAKE TO EQUAL THE POWER OF A STROKER? SHOULD I BOOST MY 4.8L? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO THAT COMPARES THE GAINS OFFERED BY STEPPING UP FROM A 4.8L TO A 5.3L, 6.0L, A 383 STROKER AND A 408 STROKER. I ALSO INCLUDED THE BENEFITS OF JUST ADDING A TURBO TO A STOCK 4.8L!

I love all of Richard’s content. I’m a ford guy currently building a mild 408w, which Richard inspired me to do lol. Next build will definitely be LS! THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU TEACH US RICHARD!

I appreciate that video. I'm towing with a 4.8 and I often wonder what other options there is. I'm contemplating a swap for a bigger stock engine as I need reliability and for what I know a turbo will affect fuel efficiency. Nice video.

Great video! Thank you for sharing! Keep up the great content! I believe bang for the buck is the turbo 4.great! Imagine what would happen with more boost! I'd like to see an 8.1l with a 80mm turbo and see what it would do. I've heard big torque like 1100 ft pounds at moderate boost.

4.8Lx1.5= 7.2L. Like Richard has said many time in the past, a turbo is just a HP/TQ magnifier.
Dial that 4.8L up to 10psi and you effectively have a 4.8Lx1.75=8.4L. BBC power right there.
To make good TQ down low, you want a properly sized turbo (not too big) so that it spools quickly.

on a street car/truck the turbo almost needs a ducted compartment (dedicated to the turbo, maybe using the exhaust from the radiator 200f vs 800f+) so the underhood temps don't get crazy. if you turbo then leave things close to the hotside components the turbo game becomes a pain. I'm thinking (still) about a 5.3 swap for my sbf 351w efi camper van because the stock gm computers are more friendly to boost and it's a more efficient / more modern setup (compared to obd1 ford). If I keep the the sbf it will need to be efficient to run it, under 12mpg is no fun. A small cam 5.3 or 6.0 with an incognito turbo setup that I can add/remove without much trouble would be my ultimate. The 5.3 with a small cam with be a good base engine but an understressed 6.0 would be ideal if I were willing to sacrifice a few mpg for some tq. Hoping for 18 mpg n/a then more than 12 mpg with boost. The LS turbo 6.0 winnebago was getting 12 mpg in a full weight stock 6.0 turbo 4l80e which has me thinking I can get decent mileage in a van under 6k lbs. With e85 in the area a turbo 5.3 or 6.0 could be fun. Thanks Richard!

I currently got a 07 classic Silverado with a 4.8, currently has a tsp intake manifold & 224r cam, push rods, valve springs, injectors, fuel pumps and t70 turbo kit runnin e85, what else can i do to it?

not too put down the turbo stuff but I think long term the stroker would last longer than the boosted 4.8L. fresh built motor plus you could run 87 octane if you have the appropriate compression where as with boost your gonna need premium fuel and lets face it nobody really wants too shell out the extra cash for premium nowadays especially in a gas guzzling truck.

What I did/currently doing: 4.8 4l60 nnbs scsb truck originally got a ly6 for it and 4l80, then decided why stop there built the 4l80, added ring gap, 821 heads, bald eagle 229 cam, 1500cc snake eater injectors (flow tested closer to 1700), dual 525 pumps and twin precision turbos, things got out of hand quickly 😂i figured it would, learned how to boost on a turbo'd b16a2 swapped CRX and I cant have a honda faster than my 6.0 truck now can I?

The 4.8 in my 02 Silverado spun a bearing. I replaced it with a 5.3. Drove it for several years on the 4.8 PCM without any problems. I'm sure a 5.3 tune would have been better but I did not have any driveability problems at all.

If you put a 5.3 on a 4.8 ECU it'll still run rich because the ECU will just adjust the fuel trims and it's allergic to the VE table.

Richard checkout Porsche’s slick intake manifold design specifically designed for boosted engines. It’d be cool to see something like that design tested on a boosted 4.8. They claim higher efficiency which means more torque!
Notes from Porsche: “The expansion intake manifold uses the principle of oscillating air in the intake manifold during the cooler expansion phase, keeping the temperature of the fuel/air mixture lower than in the 911 Turbo. This, in turn, means a significant increase in all-round efficiency, with fuel consumption down by up to 15 per cent under full load despite the increase in engine output.”

408 with a mild cam and boost....of course! A T4 7875 should be instant on with that combo.

turbo 6L reliability closer to a stock motor, torque like a 408, and lots of power on top
