The Small One (also known as A Christmas Miracle in the UK) is a 1978 American animated featurette produced by Walt Disney Productions and released theatrically by Buena Vista Distribution on December 16, 1978 with a re-issue of Pinocchio (1940). The story is based on a 1947 children's book of the same name by Charles Tazewell and was a project for the new generation of Disney animators including Don Bluth, Jerry Rees, Henry Selick, Gary Goldman, and John Pomeroy.

The fact that Doug not only got Don Bluth to do an NC episode with him but has a hand-drawn picture made by him shows Bluth is the coolest guy ever.

Hearing the boy singing gave me instant flashbacks to "It's Not Easy" from Pete's Dragon. Looked him up and, sure enough, same actor.

This is one of my absolute favorites! I love the animation for Joseph at the end. His kind, gentle face is such a relief after everything the boy and Small One go through up to that point. And I love that Small One didn't end up having a surprise superpower or advantage. He really is a small, weak, elderly animal and nothing more. Joseph is simply kind enough to see that he still has value.

On the twenty-fifth Disneycember, my critic gave to me:

Twenty-five Don Bluth films
Twenty-four hunny pots
Twenty-three Avengers
Twenty-two hard levels
Twenty-one ghost actors
Twenty bad jungle puns
Nineteen Ten Rings members
Eighteen magic dragons
Seventeen thumbs up memes
Sixteen keyblade masters
Fifteen Peter Parkers
Fourteen stylish dresses
Thirteen bad commercials
Twelve Vespas racing
Eleven Jedi fighting
Ten gangsters dancing
Nine Launchpad crashes
Eight hammy nobodies
Seven dogs a-barking
Six long delays
FIVE POWER UPS
Four bad reboots
Three magic candles
Two Sith Lords
And a blade in the shape of a key

i have always appreciated how the tanner in this short isnt vilified to an cartoonish level like most hunter/poacher types in most disney films.
hes just a guy doing his job.

Finally, critic is talking about The Small One, I used to watch this cartoon as a kid, it’s way more emotional than the little match girl! Don Bluth makes the biggest cartoon tearjerkers, but such a strong and provocative story!

Fun fact: that beautiful song the boy sings about finding a new owner for the donkey? That was written by the same guy who produced the Alpha and Omega films.

Why is Don Bluth such a master of emotion? 🥺

Don Bluth is just the best.

The small one, an American tale, land before time, secret of nymh, the stories, the animation quality, the big moments both good and bad, it's all such an amazing work of art and thete's so much more to delve into besides the basic story of each one.

Like, you could really start a talking point with your kid on immigration and the struggles of the people from various points of origin had to go through with an American tail.

Or just the fact that sometimes things might not always be in your control, but it's how you respond to those situations and band together with friends and family to push through the tough times with land before time.

I love everything about these shows.

What can one expect from a legend such as Don Bluth?
...
Exactly. Everything great.

If Don hadn’t left Disney he should have directed the Black Cauldron.

I always called the kid "Mowgli" because his design is very similar to Mowgli from the animated Jungle Book.

I remember watching the small world in 2019 and a lot of good memories at least you can find this on Disney plus as it’s so emotional

Merry Christmas, Everyone! I vaguely remember seeing this short as a kid, and never realised that it was a Don Bluth project. What a perfect subject for Christmas Day's Disneycember! 🥰

I'm glad they put this short on Disney Plus. I remember seeing a commercial of it on the Disney Channel but I have never seen it. Watched it last year and I highly recommend it as my favorite Christmas short.
