Bangladesh is an important state in South Asian geopolitics, economics, and security architecture. The recent quasi-revival of the Jamaat-e-Islami in the country’s popular politics raises questions on the trajectory of the upcoming elections in 2024 and Dhaka’s relations with the United States, which has been brought up in the run-up. This event with Mr Clifford Smith will shine some light on these regional and trans-national modalities of Bangladeshi politics, and more specifically, how these developments are seen from an American lens.

Speaker: Clifford Smith, Washington Project Director, Middle East Forum, USA
Moderator: Kabir Taneja, Fellow, ORF, India

Superb presentation, and much more than that it is a wake up call. There are indeed many more B teams for “Pakistan”.

I heard this today 06.08.2024. History proved that whatever projected in this discussion about Jamaate Islami was cardinally wrong. They are a group practising and thinking about true Islam and clear many misconceptions about Islam in the West.

Well, the key guest speaker has brought the history of Jamaat Islam and how this political organization has been able to influence and to some extent helped shaping or changing the narratives on them under the US & West’s lenses. He has also mentioned how powerful, influential is this political party and clearly mentioned how much supports they have in Bangladesh and the way it’s top most influential leaders had been eliminated in the past on the basis of their views/roles during liberation war in 1971 by allowing themselves with the oppressor which was the Pakistan.
Now, I think the speaker has presented all those facts and informations which are very clearly in the public domains; but I don’t think this open discussion of ORF really matters to anyone in Jamaat Islam of Bangladesh; these people are discussing about one of the largest religious political institutions in the world and they are talking about it’s impact in Bangladesh and in the sub continent region as well as the security issues concerned with the Jamaat Islam yet this full circle of discussion is very funny and interesting to watch as the hypocrisies are being doing by the certain people of India but no member or representative from the Jamaat Islam of Bangladesh so that he/she can speak with them and may able to make clear their utterly foolish statements/claims & on their immensely wrong views and opinions about Jamaat Islam and how it has been active in the country’s political sphere and has become a major political force in the Bangladesh with a very strong & eye catching supports from the Bangladesh’s citizens.

I agree some of the points the speaker made. However; seems this event is organized by the redial group who basically supporting the current dictator Govt. in Bangladesh through Mr. Kabir. I believe Mr. Kabir has very good interest through this initiative including make some money. He is trying to damage the Muslim sentiments and democracy of Bangladesh. Definitely, extremism is not good and should be stopped. But by the name extremism, this discussion takes a place in radical attitudes. As a Muslim and an American we should be very careful from this kind of discussion and event.
